Danmachi Airs Season 5 in Fall 2024 — and Fans Still Can't Get Over the Name

Yes, we’re getting another season — and there is probably more to come.

Summary:

  • Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? revealed a key visual for S5 and an air date.
  • Fans are looking forward to it because of how good S4 was, but can’t get over the English name of the series.
  • Some speculate that the anime will adapt all of its source material.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka), commonly known as Danmachi, is going to air its 5th season this Fall.

The series is one of the most successful fantasy light novel adaptations out there, and it has a decent fanbase. However, fans still have questions — both about the announcement and the series altogether.

The English name isn’t exactly liked by fans

The anime revealed a new key visual and an air date (October 2024), as well as the name for the next arc — “Houjou no Megami-hen,” roughly translated as “Goddess of Harvest Arc.”

This made some fans curious: the last time they got a separate arc identifier for Danmachi was S4, which was split into two arcs (and was 2 split cours long). It seems that the new season might also be two split cours — but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.

One thing fans haven’t been happy about is the English translation of the title. The Japanese name has nothing to do with “picking up girls” — it’s about seeking out encounters.

While English licensors probably chose that title to bait people into watching the anime, the source fans were noticeably upset about it. They don’t let these discussions die even now — according to them, the series’ main selling point is the fantasy world, not the harem aspect.

That said, even the part that is in both titles is often not correct if you think about it. Multiple arcs of the anime don’t even take place in a dungeon, much to the amusement of the watchers.

Season 4 makes the series worth it

The anime being on its 5th season might surprise many who are unfamiliar with it. Not many light novel adaptations get so many seasons, especially these days. Naturally, this announcement brought more attention to the anime, and more fans want to get into it.

Of course, as with all long series, Danmachi has its ups and downs. Both the second and the third seasons were criticized by fans for having a weaker story.

The second season also aired during the era where J.C.Staff was overwhelmed with other anime, and looked very rough as a result. The ultimate consensus is that the 4th season is worth it, though — it has some of the biggest payoff moments in the series so far.

A full adaptation?

Will Danmachi adapt the entire light novel series? It’s nearly impossible to predict, as the source material is still running: out of 19 currently released volumes, 14 have been adapted into anime.

At this pace, catching up with the source material will take roughly 3 cours if the anime goes at the same pace as it did during S4. It’s unknown when the LN will end, however, so any speculation would be baseless.
