Will we really get a full adaptation?
Summary:
- The studio, which worked on DAL S4 and S5, is now defunct.
- Fans don’t know if it will continue past that.
- If it does, they’ll have to wait for a while.
Date A Live has been a very interesting franchise to follow. Fans who stuck with it to this point really like it, despite its flaws — it has proven itself to be more than just a generic harem.
Despite that, the production for it has been one of the most unfortunate among recent anime — and this raises huge concerns.
The Studio Is Now Defunct
Geek Toys, the studio that produced Date A Live S4 and S5 is now defunct. While they are still credited for working on the series, they are now defunct, merged with the parent company, Geek Pictures.
This is a huge issue: while it somewhat proves that S5 is basically fully ready, it also means that we might not get a sequel anytime soon.
At the current pace, Date A Live S5 will end after Volume 19 or 20 — out of 22. This means that the remaining content could be covered in just one movie or set of specials. However, with the studio working on it being practically non-existent, we may not get it anytime soon.
Changing studios won’t be out of question for Date A Live. After all, the first four seasons were all produced by different studios — this is a unique case among modern anime productions.
There are no details as to why that happened, but the production committee seems to be intent on adapting the series further. Or at least, that was the case before.
The Franchise Itself Might Not Be Profitable
The franchise itself isn’t even really profitable at this point. While the anime still sells decently well, the spin-off, Date A Bullet, was practically a flop. That wasn’t even the worst part, though: the games based on the franchise were all unsuccessful in the last years.
Fans Don’t Know What Will Happen
At this point, the future of the franchise is uncertain. On the one hand, the studio making it doesn’t exist anymore, and while it can still be produced under the parent company, fans really doubt that will be the case. If the sequel were to be made, it would have to be produced by a different studio.
On the other hand, it’s entirely likely for Date A Live to change the studio yet again — or, for example, go back to J.C.Staff for the final stretch of volumes.
That said, there would have to be a significant restructuring within the production committee, as Geek Pictures is a part of it. As such, we might have to wait for a while.
