Reddit does not think that Death Note 2 is a good idea, but it never hurts to throw some ideas around.
A recent reddit post showed that people are not particularly interested in Death Note 2. There are outliers who would love a twist on the old concept, but most are not intrigued. The story ended, they say, and the ending seems perfect to some and dissatisfying to others. Some even suggest that the story should have ended earlier than it did. After all, it is not a new idea that Death Note has not managed to keep the attention of watchers throughout its runtime.
There is no consensus as such, but the majority does not seem to be hyped at the idea of Death Note 2.
In other words, no, Death Note 2 does not need to happen. Nobody is waiting for it, and after the 2017 movie, many are skeptical about any possible retellings. Besides, if you crave more Death Note content, there is a one-shot (The a-Kira Story) that might help. Fan parodies exist, too. Many have not read the manga, so they can use it to get more Death Note in their system. There are solutions that do not involve a sequel.
That said, it is not wrong to want another take on the whole notion. The a-Kira Story comes close to it, but what about a person who receives a Death Note and does not use it (and does not sell it to the highest bidder either)? A regular person is not that likely to want to kill people off with no remorse; Light Yagami was objectively unique in his disregard for human life. He was also exceptionally smart, too, so what about a normal, regular human trying to use the Note and quickly being apprehended, leaving Ryuk to die of boredom yet again? What about a funhouse version of the events of the actual Death Note, something similar to Hellsing Ultimate Abridged, but made officially and not by fan efforts?
Your imagination can create any number of ideas, any mishmash of styles and genres and storylines. And regardless of how the past attempt did not work out, there are people out there who want “Death Note but in the modern US” executed well, too. At the very least, it could be an attempt to apologize to everyone who watched the 2017 failure of a movie.
So if you want Death Note 2, you are not alone! One can always hope.
