What is he to her truly?
Summary:
- Himmel definitely loved Frieren.
- It’s unclear whether she felt the same way.
- What if she thought that dating humans was unreasonable due to their short lifespan?
Okay, calling Himmel a pet is not a good thing to do, and we apologize if we hurt your feelings. After all, we love him dearly just like everyone else in the Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) fandom. So the pet comparison was not to make him look like a lesser human being, no. We just want to discuss this analogy that the Frieren fandom has recently brought up.
Frieren and Himmel’s relationship
The hints at something going on between Frieren and Himmel were in the series from early episodes. After all, it was Himmel’s death that became the starting point for Frieren’s decision to evaluate her life and understand human bonds more. And the more the story progresses, the more obvious it gets: Himmel was in love.
The scene of him buying a ring for Frieren and giving it to her on one knee was good enough proof for Himmel’s feelings. On top of that, the design on the ring is a mirrored lotus, which symbolizes "eternal love" in the language of flowers. What other evidence do you need?
While it’s fairly obvious that Himmel loved Frieren, there are still some uncertainties about her feelings. Did she reciprocate? Or was he just a good friend to her?
Most fans suggest that Frieren did love Himmel, too. She just didn’t fully understand that herself. Her life is too long, and the 10 years she spent with Himmel and the rest of the party were just a mere moment in her life. Frieren had no idea that such a fleeting moment could cause her to love someone, so romantic feelings were not on her mind. But fans are still sure: what she felt was love, too.
Frieren didn’t see any potential in such a relationship
Having romantic theories is super fun, but what about less wholesome ones? This is where our pet analogy comes into the picture. What if their relationship leading nowhere was a racial issue? We’re not saying that Frieren is racist, of course, but what if she had no idea that elves could get involved with humans?
It all goes back to how long their lives are and how superior they are to humans. It’s like when you have a pet, and their life is extremely short compared to yours, and you love them dearly, but you would never think of anything else, even if they looked more like you. Himmel might have been like that to Frieren. Why promise something to someone who is not equal to you and will probably die after just a short time?
This theory is rather cruel, so we prefer the one that states that Frieren actually had feelings for Himmel, but still, it’s definitely something to think about.
