The series brings back veterans of the franchise, as well as acclaimed staff members from shows such as One Piece and Digimon.
Goku’s seiyuu returns once again.
It’s been a month since the announcement of Dragon Ball Daima. A brand-new series with an original story by Akira Toriyama himself, it is going to follow the cast of the series turning young. However, outside of a PV and the release date (Fall 2024), we have not known any information on the series until now.
Character designs and script
The character designs originally done by Toriyama himself, are adapted for animation by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. Within the series, he is mostly known for being responsible for the designs in the latter half of the original Dragon Ball Z series, as well as for being an animator for some of the most iconic sequences in the franchise. For example, he was heavily involved in the Goku vs Cooler fight in DBZ’s fifth movie, Cooler’s Revenge. Outside of Dragon Ball, he is mostly known for his work on the character designs for Digimon anime.
While Toriyama is said to be involved with the series more than he usually is, there’s still limit to how much he can actually do. The person credited for script supervision is Yuuko Kakihara. While she hasn’t worked on the franchise before this, she has a large number of screenwriting credits for all the different kinds of anime, including shows such Digimon tri., The Aquatope on White Sand (Shiroi Suna no Aquatope), and multiple adaptations as well, such as Tsuki ga Kirei.
Direction
There are two people credited for the direction of the new series. The new is Aya Komaki, who doesn’t have many anime credits. However, she is well-known for being the director for the first half of the Wano arc in One Piece — the Wano arc is considered by many to be one of the highlights of the anime. The other is Yoshitaka Yashima, a veteran animator who worked on multiple entries of Dragon Ball before, being an episode director for many episodes of Dragon Ball Super. Needless to say, the series seems to be in good hands.
More information to be released
The last, but not least, bit of information is that Masako Nozawa is returning yet again to voice Goku. You can only admire her dedication — she has been the one and only voice for the character for almost forty years! We can only hope the rest of the cast reprises their roles as well. More information on the series, however, is only expected in late January, during a game-related event.
