Eiichiro Oda’s One-shot Monsters Anime Adaptation Reveals a Release Date

Dragons are coming!

Summary:

  • Monsters is a one-shot manga by the author of One Piece.
  • It follows Ryuma, who also appears in One Piece.
  • The manga is being adapted into an anime, and is scheduled for 2024.

Monsters is a one-shot manga by Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece. It was originally published in the 1994 Shonen Jump Autumn Special. Monsters: Ippyaku Sanjou Hiryuu Jigoku is an upcoming anime adaptation of the chapter that was announced during the One Piece Day 2023 event in July.

What is it about?

Monsters’ story explores the world where powerful dragons exist. Years ago, a village was destroyed by one of such creatures, and the only survivors were a little girl, Flare, and her savior, swordsman Cyrano. Meanwhile, a mysterious relic, a Dragon Horn that is said to allow one to control dragons, and that was stolen years ago is about to appear again. What does it all have to do with Ryuma? Read the manga (or wait for the anime) and find out!

Coming 2024

Animation Digital Network officially announced on their X page that Monsters is coming in 2024 on their platform. ADN is a French streaming service, and as of now we don’t have any further details about any international releases. But we have a feeling that 2024 will become a celebration all over the world, and not just in France.

E&H Production is responsible for animating Monsters, and they have released a key visual and a small teaser visual for the anime. It portrays a frightening black dragon with glaring red eyes. The sound design of the teaser gives you scary and mysterious vibes, and promises at least a couple of samurai fights with its slice-of-a-sword effect.

Back in July, when the anime was initially announced, One Piece fans were surprised but more than happy. Monsters was the first time we saw Ryuma, a legendary samurai, who later appeared in One Piece. Fans are dreaming about some extra content that will connect the Monsters and One Piece universes even more. The legend told in Monsters is already canon in One Piece (although as what happened in Wano, and not in the cowboy town from the one-shot manga), but there’s still hope to see a few extra details. Maybe it will be revealed that Wano used to be very different from what it is now, and it originated from that small town we see in Monsters.

It’s fair to say that One Piece fans are super excited for this project, and are looking forward to more information being revealed. And we can’t wait either and hope that there will be a proper release date in the near future.
