Elias and Alcyone have a little chat about their similarities and differences. Let’s compare them!
The second part of the second season of The Ancient Magus' Bride (Mahou Tsukai no Yome) is ongoing, and in the most recent episode, Elias and Alcyone chat about their similarities and differences. We want to compare the two creatures.
We will try to avoid spoilers, but make sure that you keep up with the new episodes just in case.
Elias is a bit of a mystery. It is not clear how or why he emerged, and his memories of his past before Lindel are not very clear. For example, he vaguely remembers eating human flesh, but he is not sure if it is true. He is considered to be both a fae and a human creature, and he does have human emotions, even though he is not very familiar with them.
Alcyone, on the other hand, is an artificial fae. It does mean that she has some connection to humans, but that connection is mostly in the fact that they created or summoned her. She is a fae, and she can take different forms, including incorporeal and corporeal ones. That is what she believes makes her similar to Elias. Indeed, Elias can be corporeal, but he also can hide in shadows, as he did with Chise and Lindel.
Finally, of course, Alcyone and Elias are both in charge of students; Alcyone is supposed to look after Philomela, and Elias is supposed to look after Chise. Elias comments that it seems to him that the situation is reversed, with Chise looking after Elias or them looking after each other. In any case, they are connected, just like Alcyone is connected to Philomela.
According to Alcyone, she is meant to serve the ones who had summoned her. Elias, on the other hand, has his own will and acts in accordance with that. At least at this point, he is definitely a creature with free will. If Alcyone is right, Elias might have been a summoned creature at some point, but if he had been, he is no longer that. This appears to be the main difference between them. Additionally, Elias is a magus, which also sets him apart from an artificial fae.
Alcyone comments on being jealous of Elias, who comforts her, stating that there is nothing to be jealous of. However, as an artificial creature that was literally summoned to serve, Alcyone probably has a point. Still, the fact that Alcyone can think about such things probably means that she is more than her duty.
