Elves in Frieren’s Universe: Was Himmel in Love With an Asexual?

Elves in Frieren’s Universe: Was Himmel in Love With an Asexual?

Frieren calmly acknowledges that her race is dying out because of being uninterested in romance. Is that why Himmel and Frieren never got together?

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sōsō no Furīren) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • According to Frieren, her race is rare because it is dying out due to lack of interest in romance.
  • While it makes sense for a longer-lived race not to procreate at the rate of humans, it is still a somewhat chilly thought.
  • It makes you wonder if Himmel and Frieren were becoming a couple, but it never quite happened because of elves being mostly asexual.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has a very interesting and thought-out world with different races that remind one of Dungeons and Dragons. There is a lot to learn about these races, which includes finding out why elves are rare.

So, Why Are Elves Rare?

Without any worry in her voice, Frieren explains that her kind is rare because it is dying out. She says that elves do not have a lot of romantic desire, and they do tend to take things slow because of their lifespan. On the one hand, it sounds logical; if elves had the procreation urge of a human, there would be a massive overpopulation problem. But in the end, it means that elves are dying out, even though they are taking their time with it — as they do with everything.

Was Himmel Close to Getting With Frieren?

Himmel, one of the humans who traveled with Frieren to defeat the Demon King, seems to have a special place in Frieren’s heart. For example, it is Himmel that Einsam, the illusion monster, showed to Frieren the time when they met.

Himmel had probably always been special, but back then, Frieren took her time to fully understand that human lifespans are shorter than her own. Perhaps, Frieren and Himmel were forming a bond, but ten years proved to be too little time for Frieren to understand how much Himmel meant to her. As a result, they parted ways after their 10-year journey and met only briefly after that.

Frieren understood what Himmel meant to her only at his funeral. As for Himmel, we will never learn what his thoughts were, but he did tell Frieren why he was insisting on creating statues of their party. He said that it was to make sure that Frieren would never be alone. For all his superficial qualities, Himmel seemed to understand the problems of a long lifespan better than Frieren. He clearly cared for her, but it took her a little too long to realize that she cared for him too, which is typical of elves. They always take their time.
