Episode 7 of Berserk of Gluttony Has Serious Pacing Problems, and That’s Not Good at All

The latest episode of Berserk of Gluttony looks like two episodes smashed together, and that’s not good when we meet one of the few likable characters in the series.

Berserk of Gluttony (Boushoku no Berserk) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • Ep.7 appears to include too much information in a short period of time.
  • That causes issues, especially as a new character, Aaron, is introduced.
  • Viewer doesn’t spend enough time with Aaron to like him or worry about him.
  • As a result of pacing problems, it’s difficult to be invested in the storyline.

Episode 7

Episode 7 of Berserk of Gluttony has serious pacing issues, which fans have noticed and commented upon a lot. The episode includes Fate arriving to a village, training and befriending his trainer, Aaron, going to the castle nearby to destroy a Lich and help Aaron’s family say a final goodbye. On top of that, there is a cliffhanger about Vlarick siblings acquiring the philosopher’s stone and learning about their brother’s death. It feels like at least some source material was cut to make it all fit into one episode, and our money is on the training. It’s just too fast; there must have been more to it!

The Result

The episode’s pacing is unexpectedly fast. The training doesn’t look like a journey; just two rounds of fighting don’t give us a feeling of accomplishment. What is even more upsetting is that Aaron’s character doesn’t get any development, and the viewer doesn’t manage to feel attached to him. It is especially sad since Aaron is one of the few good, non-malicious characters in the whole series. Everything is too sudden, and some fans complain about whiplash while others try to enjoy what they have. Of course, life is fast, but should it be so fast in an anime?

It is also noteworthy that Berserk of Gluttony didn’t seem to have such problems before, which is why the pacing in Episode 7 is especially jarring. We can theorize that there is too much source material that needs to be fit into the cour, but we hope that future episodes will not have such issues. Otherwise, we won’t be able to enjoy the existing and new characters interacting with each other, which means that the anime will have no stakes since we cannot relate to any of the characters.

Let’s hope that Episode 7 is the only one to suffer from erratic pacing.
