Every Haikyuu!! Team Could Be the Protagonists of Their Own Story

Every Haikyuu!! Team Could Be the Protagonists of Their Own Story

Seriously, every character in the series is unique and has the potential to be a protagonist.

Summary:

  • Haikyuu!! has a lot of great characters, many of which could be the protagonists of their own stories.
  • Fans feel like there could be a spin-off featuring different protagonists.
  • There’s already a spin-off manga about other schools, but it mostly focuses on their activities outside of volleyball.

Haikyuu!! is the most popular sports anime nowadays for a multitude of reasons. First of all, volleyball is fun to watch — and easy to understand even if you were unfamiliar with the sport prior to watching the anime. Moreover, it’s well-made and decently long — there’s a lot of content, and fans love long stories.

Another thing that is often mentioned is the number of great characters. Haikyuu!! has a ton of them, and it can often be hard to choose the best ones — their dynamics are what makes the series so good. Some fans feel like pretty much anyone in the series could be the protagonist — and that point makes a lot of sense.

A spin-off or an alternate retelling with different protagonists

Every team in Haikyuu!! has a bunch of well-written characters that would make for great protagonists. In fact, some of the teams got more actual focus on them throughout the series.

The one that perhaps got the most screen time outside of Karasuno is the Nekoma team — they were the main focus of the Land vs Sky OVA. They also appeared in the latest movie, The Dumpster Battle — and some of the earlier events were shown from the perspective of Kenma Kozume.

These bits of alternate perspective give fans ideas. While Haikyuu!! is already great by itself, it would be very cool to see the series again, perhaps in the form of a spin-off focusing on a different high school. That way, they’d get the events of the series retold in a very different way — of course, more Haikyuu!! content is always good.

One thing about the protagonists in shounen manga is that they always succeed at the end. There’s little doubt that the Karasuno team will win the finals — limiting the potential for spin-offs focusing on other series. That said, if the mangaka focused on a different team in the first place, perhaps the plot would be completely different.

There’s already a spin-off manga

That said, there is actually a spin-off for Haikyuu!! called Haikyuu-bu!!. It’s just a manga — it doesn’t have any adaptation — and it focuses on teams other than the Karasuno team.

It, however, places less emphasis on the volleyball itself, showing the daily life of the players outside of the sport. It’s a fun read if you want more screen time from your favorite characters from other schools.
