Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest — Everything You Need to Know

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest — Everything You Need to Know

Yes, Fairy Tail is getting a sequel.

Summary:

  • Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest is getting an adaptation.
  • It’s a direct sequel to the original — which basically means it’s more of the same.
  • It will air this summer and is produced by J.C.Staff.

Fairy Tail ended with its final season in 2019. The manga has actually ended even earlier — in 2017. While fans were somewhat disappointed by the later arcs of the series, they were happy to see it conclude.

However, almost immediately, the manga received a sequel called Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest. It is a direct continuation of the original — that means, it’s pretty much more of the same.

People started to lose interest in the franchise, and not many actually follow the new manga. That said, it still has enough of a fanbase to have received an adaptation.

What is this?

100 Years Quest releases a new chapter every two weeks. Unlike the original series, it isn’t drawn by Hiro Mashima: he simply supervises the plot. However, Atsuo Ueda is very good at keeping the art style as close to the original as possible.

While 100 Years Quest started as a side project for Mashima while he focuses on his other works, it has been releasing new chapters for a while. As of now, there are over 150 chapters out — more than enough for 6 cours of the anime. Fans speculate only 2 cours will be produced at first, though.

What to expect from it?

If you’re expecting something new from 100 Years Quest, you have wrong expectations. After all, it’s still a Hiro Mashima series — you either love or hate his writing. Between Rave Master (Groove Adventure Rave), Fairy Tail and Edens Zero, there are always similar character designs, tropes and dynamics. It’s not like this one is going to be an exception.

And no, it is not going to be standalone. It is a direct continuation of the original series — meaning, you would have to watch all 300+ episodes, or read 500+ chapters of its manga.

Speculations

The anime is scheduled for Summer 2024 — and will be produced by J.C.Staff. They have already made the Edens Zero anime, albeit fans didn’t really like that one as much. It seems that “Fairy Tail but in space” isn’t an especially appealing premise.

The Edens Zero anime also didn’t look very good. With so little time between the reveal of the airing date and the actual date for 100 Years Quest, this might also be an issue.

That said, it’s way too early to talk about that — especially because we don’t even have a PV and don’t know for how long the anime will run.
