Summary:

  • The ending of Attack on Titan is controversial, and fans have multiple misconceptions about it.
  • Eren does not become a bird in the end.
  • He also did give his reasons for starting The Rumbling, despite the choice being wro

The ending of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) is controversial for a multitude of reasons. The final arcs in general are controversial, with pretty much every scene featuring a plot twist of some kind. Of course, many characters die, and some of these deaths fans consider unjustified.

The most controversial part, however, is Eren executing The Rumbling at the end of the series. Fans were torn between whether he was right or wrong, mostly split between two camps. Everything that happened after that was even more controversial, as it relied mostly on symbolism and exploration of themes previously established by the series. No wonder many found the ending too confusing and convoluted.

Eren did not, in fact, become a bird

One huge misconception fans have about the ending of Attack on Titan is the notion that at the end, Eren "turns into a bird". To be fair, it is easy to understand why: after all, Mikasa seems to directly refer to the bird as "Eren".

However, that doesn't mean that Eren became the bird: rather, it's shown that Eren still watches over his comrades and Paradis even in death.

This symbolism is actually very obvious to fans — so obvious that some even refused to believe it's that simple. Perhaps that's one of the reasons for the Eren-bird theory, which sounds funny at first, but in reality annoys both sides of the argument. It's just a misconception that also very much oversimplifies the series.

Eren did, in fact, know why he started The Rumbling

A lot of things about Attack on Titan get misinterpreted a lot, especially about its later arcs. The Rumbling itself was an incredibly controversial plot point, but that didn't stop fans from defending Eren's choice during it. Apparently, destroying 90% of humanity is a perfectly fine choice that made sense to them.

The point is, however, that this should have never happened in the first place, and the fate of the world definitely should not have been in the hands of one person. By starting The Rumbling, Eren essentially became a villain protagonist — which also made him into one of the best-written characters in all of anime.

Some fans point that he didn't know why he started The Rumbling in the first place, but that, as well, is a misconception. He gave multiple reasons for it to Armin, and this idea is just based on one out-of-context line: it's unfair to bring it up as a serious argument. In the end, one of the themes of Attack on Titan is the cycle of war, and this is a part of commentary on it.
