Seriously, this might not be a good idea.
Summary:
- A lot of fans seem to think that the remake of One Piece anime is not a very good idea.
- A common point brought up is that the new anime might be too rushed.
- Fans also don't believe it will go further than East Blue, making it pointless in the first place.
The Netflix remake of One Piece, titled "The One Piece", is among the biggest anime announcements we've got recently. Not only is it weird — and somewhat controversial — that we are getting a remake for an iconic anime that is still airing, we also just don't have much information on it.
While some fans are optimistic about it — Wit, the studio working on it, is one of the most beloved studios in the industry — others are less than happy. There are many ways for this remake to go wrong, so let's go over some of them.
It might be too rushed
Perhaps the main concern about the series is the pacing. While this topic is very controversial among One Piece fans, most agree that the pacing of the original series really suffers in the latter arcs as the anime catches up to the manga. That said, the pacing of the first arcs is perfectly fine as is.
The new anime is going to adapt the East Blue Saga, which is just the first part of the series.
While it's unknown if there are plans to adapt any further, and no information on how long the remake will be, fans are already worried. If, for example, the anime will try to cover the East Blue Saga in just 2 cours, it will be a disaster.
The studio choice is concerning
Another issue is that the remake is being done by Wit.
The studio is famous for their top-tier productions, but they have also never finished any adaptation by themselves. Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) and Vinland Saga went to MAPPA, and The Ancient Magus' Bride (Mahoutsukai no Yome) was given to a relatively unknown studio Kafka.
It is entirely possible the remake will not go farther than East Blue, making it pointless in the first place.
More possible issues
There are also concerns about the new fans judging the franchise based entirely on their experience with the prequel. Early One Piece is much less epic in scale and somewhat more humorous. It's not bad, but it's hardly the peak of One Piece.
It's also a question of people only watching the remake, which will have to spend years to catch up to the original anime. New fans might not want to watch or read further than the remake, making discussions completely impossible. It seems that many fans aren't convinced this remake is going to go far, and we can't blame them.
