Fans Say, No Good Villain in Berserk of Gluttony?

A good hero needs a good villain to fight against, but all the evil in Berserk of Gluttony is mediocre.

Berserk of Gluttony (Boushoku no Berserk) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • Fans are disappointed by the villains in Berserk of Gluttony and find their number excessive.
  • Fate, the main character, seems to be surrounded by evil people at every stage of his life.
  • However, no evil in Berserk of Gluttony is impressive.
  • Fans would rather see Fate have a real villain to fight.

Berserk of Gluttony is dedicated to Fate, a young man with a very special skill, surviving in a world that resembles a role-playing game. Characters in it grind for levels and improved skills. For the longest time, Fate was certain that his skill, Gluttony, was only good for making him constantly hungry. It is only after he accidentally kills a person that he realizes that he is gluttonous for souls, not regular food.

Everyone Is a Bad Person

The world of Berserk of Gluttony is full of people who abused Fate when he was still unaware of his skill’s hidden abilities. Fans do not find such numbers believable, and they do not understand the motivation of some of the evildoers. For example, the latest episode shows that the people in Fate’s home village literally threw stones at him until he left because they didn’t want to deal with Fate after his father died. It could be explained by the Gluttony skill; perhaps, Fate ate very much, and the villagers did not want to feed him, but that hardly explains the decision to stone a child.

In Fate’s world, there are just too many villains to even count, with an occasional nice person like Roxy. It seems that the anime-makers want Fate to be against the whole world. Even though he forgives some people, like his childhood bully, he also enjoys taking revenge, and it’s bloody. In the latest episode, Fate took revenge on Hado Vlerick, and it was brutal.

Boring Villains

Berserk of Gluttony fails to create a villain that is really intimidating or heinous. Fans hope for one of the Vlericks to eventually develop into a villain worth fighting against, but that hope is slim. For the time being, fans call the enemies in Berserk of Gluttony c-listers and don’t consider them worthy of attention.

While there is a place in anime for revenge stories and being against the whole world, Berserk of Gluttony doesn't quite manage to make this narrative work due to lackluster villains. We hope that will change, and one of the Vlericks achieves his potential, but so far the anime has failed to create a compelling villain.

Do you find the villains in Berserk of Gluttony compelling?
