Food in Anime: From Infamous Cabbage to Mouth-Watering Masterpieces

Do you remember the cabbage? If not, you are in for a surprise! Let us talk about food in anime.

These days, anime has amazing-looking food. Sometimes the anime is devoted to food, and it makes sense for a culinary show to have good-looking food, even if the show is drawn. However, often it is just a regular anime, and the food there looks so good you want to eat it.

But it was not always like that.

Bad animation is not uncommon in shows with smaller budgets, and it is understandable and forgivable to an extent. However, Brighter than the Dawning Blue went a little too far and turned their cabbage into a simple green circle. Or a green sphere, as the character shows later by chopping it up. Brighter than the Dawning Blue DVD had the circle remade into a much better-quality cabbage, but the damage had already been done. New anime started to appear with unreasonably realistic cabbage, as if as a reminder of the shame of Brighter than the Dawning Blue.

In the meantime, we will focus on examples of good food that is not cabbage. Amazing food can be found in any anime these days, but showing you an anime about cooking would be cheating. Just keep in mind that Restaurant To Another World, Ristorante Paradiso and Food Wars! exist and are beautiful. Even your average anime can offer something better than a green sphere.

Absolutely gorgeous food alongside a bittersweet plot can be found in Sweetness & Lightning. In this anime, a father has to learn to cook for his daughter after the mother of the family passes away. Watching the anime, you feel for the characters, and the food scenes, both cooking and eating, help develop the father-daughter relationship.

Laid-Back Camp is another anime that naturally includes food but does not focus on it. It makes sense for the plot, too; the anime is about camping, which calls for cooking some food, often over a fire, or bringing food with you. It is an adorable slice-of-life anime with yummy-looking food, and it is comfortable and pleasant to watch.

Finally, for a supernatural twist, we have the first season of Black Butler. The anime has glorious shots of food prepared by the main character's diabolically good butler. There is even a food competition for the butler to excel at, and he cooks curry buns while other characters offer their own spin on curry recipes. All the food looks great, although some of it might make you obsessed. Spoiler: it is not the demon's curry.

In the end, we should probably thank the green circle. Due to it, watching food in anime now is an extremely pleasant experience.
