Frieren and Spice and Wolf Are More Similar Than You Might Realize

It may sound weird, but they have the same vibe.

Summary:

  • Some fans believe Spice and Wolf is similar to Frieren.
  • They have similar structure and explore related themes.
  • Most importantly, they have similar vibes.

One of the most popular anime of the past few years was Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Frieren). Discussions about it took over the internet instantly, and the anime still holds the #1 spot on MyAnimeList, indicating just how much fans like it.

There’s nothing really like Frieren airing right now, at least to most fans. The animation quality was outstanding, and it was what initially attracted many fans — who then stayed for the characters and atmosphere of the series.

Nothing in the Spring 2024 anime season looks as good, but surprisingly enough, there’s something that has a similar vibe. It’s the remake of Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou), and yes, they have quite a few things in common.

Have you felt Spice and Wolf is similar to Frieren?

It Might Sound Weird, but There Are Similarities

It sounds like a very weird comparison — at first glance, the only thing the two anime have in common is both belonging to the fantasy genre. That’s actually not the only thing, though: they have similar vibe and even explore somewhat similar themes.

Both anime are quite slow-paced, but have an adventure feeling to them. The characters travel long distances in a fantasy world, and often, the plot revolves around different people they meet on their journey. Both also feature a heavy amount of dialogue, which doesn’t make them worse: in fact, it’s a nice break from series that are just fights and nothing else.

They Explore Similar Themes

Interestingly enough, both anime also feature a main female character who has lived for an incredibly long time. Frieren herself is an immortal elf, while Holo is a wolf goddess of the harvest. They behave quite differently, though, as Frieren barely shows any emotions. Holo is very different, and we see that in the very first arc of the anime.

Still, the main theme of Frieren is the passage of time and how it influences us. You can argue that’s actually related to how Spice and Wolf explores the change of society overtime. Holo can’t let go of her past at first, and humans don’t really worship her as they used to — the world changes overtime.

They Have the Same Vibes

Of course, the plots of these two anime have nothing to do with each other. Still, it’s possible to argue that they have similar appeal. Both get you in the mood for a slow adventure, and they have excellent OST and somewhat melancholic feeling to them. Perhaps, if you like one, you should try the other.
