As long as it is actually good.
Summary:
- Multiple staff members stated Frieren spent a lot of time in production.
- Its popularity has become an international phenomenon.
- Fans understand they might have to wait for some time before a potential sequel comes out.
According to the comments posted on X (formerly Twitter) by multiple staff members of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Frieren), the production of the anime started about 2 years ago.
Not the pre-production stages, but actual work on animating the series already — and this surprised many fans, as this is somewhat earlier than it usually happens.
More specifically, Evan Call, the composer for the anime, mentioned starting to write music for it around 2 years ago. The character designer for the adaptation, Reiko Nagasawa, stated the same date.
It seems that the anime has been worked on for quite a while, and fans are content with giving the staff more time to work on another season if it ever happens.
Its popularity basically guarantees another season at some point
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has become so popular that it’s practically an international phenomenon.
In the West, it’s being called a resurrection of the fantasy genre — while that’s not exactly true, it definitely gave it a new breath, bringing it back to popularity and proving that not all modern fantasy anime are isekai-like.
In Japan, it’s selling incredibly well, and the TV ratings are some of the highest for its airing slot.
As such, fans are confident it will get another season at some point. The official X account for the series posting an image with a message “The journey to Ende continues” has sparked debate within the community.
This post can be seen as an announcement for a second season — or just a teaser for something else.
Fans understand they’ll have to wait for a while
Regardless of what the cryptic post actually means, Frieren fans want their anime to continue in the same way as it was made. After all, the production values of the anime were absolutely top-tier, and fans expect a potential sequel to look just as good.
This might not actually be possible given the normal production schedule. However, the production of the existing Frieren anime was already abnormal, and many credit it to the producer, Yuuichirou Fukushi, who assembled a top-tier team for Frieren (and before that, for One Punch Man S1).
Fans wish for everyone who worked on the anime to get a good rest before going onto other projects. They fully realize a production of this scale might not happen in a while, as people involved might be working on other projects.
Regardless, they seem to be content with waiting for a while — if this guarantees the sequel being good.
