For a meditative show, Frieren seems to have a lot of battles. With Episode 10 upcoming, let’s remember and gush about the battles in Episode 9!
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) spoilers ahead.
Summary
Ep. 9 battles give an opportunity for both Stark and Fern to shine.
Fans believe that Stark could have won faster if he allowed Linie to hit him with her inferior strength and focused more on attack than defense.
Fern was bound to win, but fans also highlight that Lügner got distracted by Linie’s death.
So far, fans adore battles in Frieren, and nobody can blame them because the animation is great. While Frieren is, overall, a calmer experience than most fantasy anime, it does have a fair share of fighting. Episode 9 is a great example of that.
Episode 9
As a part of the Aura Arc, Episode 9 features two main battles: Lügner against Fern and Linie against Stark. Both demons are very powerful, which is why Stark did not want to fight them. They leave the characters no choice, though, and fans gladly watch the two demons die.
Comments on Episode 9 are overwhelmingly about the fights the two main characters face, with fans especially happy about the animation. While the characters’ expressions are subtle, especially for an anime, they are animated. It is especially true for Lügner. When he notices Linie fall, his alarmed expression is focused on. And to make it better, his lack of attention is not just verbally chastised. Fern doesn’t tell Lügner to pay attention; she just punishes him with an instant death, which fans loved and found realistic.
Fern and Stark’s Powers
Fans believe that Fern’s abilities don't just appear out of nowhere. In the previous episodes, Fern was also quite quick with her magic. Even though the anime calls attention to her speed in Episode 9, it does not come out of left field. Fern is shown to study with Frieren early on, which also explains her abilities and makes the fight satisfying. Despite the fact that Lügner is a strong opponent, Fern is faster than him, and her simple spells make him struggle to keep up.
As for Stark’s fight, fans are happy to learn that Linie might use Eisen’s style but cannot put enough force behind it to actually make the moves powerful. It takes Stark some time to realize that, but once he stops defending and starts attacking, letting Linie injure him, the fight is over in seconds. Fans are certain Stark could have won sooner, but better late than never.
Fan Opinions
Despite the fact that Frieren is not focused on battles, every time the anime features one, it is excellent. Fans adore Frieren’s calmer moments, but the reception of Episode 9 shows that they love a fight as well. Some fans commented that the inner monologue of the characters was not necessary, but nobody seems to be opposed to the flashbacks of both Fern and Stark. Overall, fans were happy to see the fights of Episode 9, and they are hoping for more action in Episode 10.
