Future Is Here: 5 Best Anime That Deal with the Topic of AI

Future Is Here: 5 Best Anime That Deal with the Topic of AI

In most of them, AI is way more capable of thought than in our own world.

With the technical progress of our world, artificial intelligence becomes more and more prominent. That said, it’s still not particularly intelligent — let alone sentient.

However, that concept was explored quite a lot in fiction. That includes anime — here are 5 examples of it.

Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell (Koukaku Kidoutai) is perhaps the most influential anime that deals with the topic of artificial intelligence. Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg, and she often finds herself wondering how different — if any — she is from humans.

Set in a cyberpunk world where cybercrime is abundant, the anime heavily influenced its own genre. The movie is a must-watch for all cyberpunk fans, and the TV series is really good as well.

Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song

The idea of machines rebelling against their masters has been around for a while. Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song takes that idea and combines it with a complex plot. It follows Vivy, one of the first “sentient” AI — who is a songstress who is just supposed to make people happy.

However, she’s supposed to fix the timeline — prevent the terrible future from ever happening — while also finding answers to many questions about herself and the world.

Psycho-Pass

Funnily enough, Psycho-Pass is probably the one series that is actually the closest to our current level of artificial intelligence. The anime is set in a dystopian world where an AI known as the Sibyl System determines how dangerous someone is to society.

The system, however, is imperfect — and might already be used for evil. While we’re not living in such a world (just yet), this anime serves as a grim reminder of how terrifying AI can be when used by wrong people.

Time of Eve

Time of Eve (Eve no Jikan) is a series of shorts that was later compiled into a movie. In the world where people are prejudiced against sentient AI, it shows the daily life of a cafe where everyone can go and vent and tell their life story.

The twist? The twist is that you actually never know if you’re talking to a human or an AI. Everyone has the same rights, and the anime shows that the difference is not that big.

Garakowa -Restore the World-

A really weird short movie, Garakowa -Restore the World- (Glass no Hana to Kowasu Sekai) is set in a post-apocalyptic world. Except, of course, that’s not the human world.

The characters in the movie are actually antivirus programs, designed to scan the PC and fight off viruses. While that might sound like a very bizarre premise, the movie is actually quite bittersweet — and has absolutely gorgeous visuals.
