Hard No: 5 Scenes That Made Us Drop Anime Series

Now why did they do that?!

This little list will be filled with spoilers, because we're gonna talk about moments in anime that made us so disappointed that we just stopped being interested in these shows. These moments can be called instant turn-offs. These moments made us feel dumb, or used, or just offended, and silently ask the universe why the author decided to do that.

We've got five shows here, but there are many reasons for a show to become repulsive.

Rent-a-Girlfriend (Kanojo Okarishimasu) — Kazuya stalking Chizuru

 - image 1

Kazuya has been crowned numerous times as one of the most horrendous male characters in anime and manga. He's too pathetic even for a harem story, and not in a cute "I want to protect him at all costs"-way, but in a disgusting and appalling way. His behavior doesn't change, so some people quit after the moment in Episode 1, where he stalks the girl he rents, Chizuru.

God Of High School — Wedding Episode

 - image 2

The combination of a wedding that spawned seemingly out of nowhere and a Kill Bill-style wedding violence that follows is quite puzzling. There was no reason for the wedding to happen, and it solidified the impression of the whole season feeling like a patchwork blanket where ideas are hastily thrown together and hastily thrown away. The problem with pacing exists in the anime adaptation, though, the manhwa's continuity is more solid.

Fairy Tail — Fight between Natsu, Rogue and Sting

 - image 3

Sure thing, it's a beautifully animated fight. Gorgeous, even, with the soundtrack enhancing the action on the screen. But from the plot and character point of view, it just doesn't make sense. Sting has proven to be a very capable fighter, and simply surrendering in a fight by Rouge's side felt very out of character and destroyed the cohesiveness of the plot and character arcs. Granted, after this moment Fairy Tail turned into a fanservice mess, but the disappointment still lingers.

Pokemon — any episode before Gen 7 where starter Pokemon beat Ash's leveled-up ones

 - image 4

Imagine: you've been gathering resources, building bonds with your Pokemon, playing with them, training them, feeding them their favorite berries, and letting them goof around in the water and in the sky. Then you get to a new region, pockets full of balls, and stumble upon an endemic Pokemon, say, some starter Chikorita. You whip out your Charizard, believing that your boy is going to dominate over everyone — but he ends up being destroyed by that tiny Chikorita. This is roughly the plot of the majority of the episodes of the Pokemon anime before Gen 7 and it makes people rage quit. It's pretty relatable.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion — Lelouch losing control

 - image 5

Just three episodes shy of the finale you can feel that everything is going too smoothly. Lelouch is finally making peace with Euphemia as they discuss Japan's future, he jokes about killing all Japanese people, but loses control of his Geass and Euphemia goes on a bloodbath. She tries to resist it, she really does, but she can't, and her life is doomed. This was so painful and felt unnecessary, but that twist put the show on the pedestal of one of the most highly regarded anime of that decade. Good for them.
