Hidden Gem: What's Good About Overtake! And Why This Anime is Worth Watching

Why doesn't anyone talk about it?

Summary:

  • Overtake! is a new release for the fall season.
  • It's a story about a middle-aged photographer and a young racer.
  • The visual design of the series is an additional pleasure.

The popularity of sports anime does not decline. Creators always try to diversify these seemingly typical stories about endurance. One tries to experiment with drama, while another offers new angles. Sometimes they do it well! Anime about racing is not a new feature, and there are two titles being released this season. One of them is Overtake! by TROYCA, known for Aldnoah.Zero.

What is Overtake! about?

The plot revolves around two characters. Kouya Madoka is a middle-aged man. He used to be a successful photographer, but Kouya lost his desire to take pictures and became a loser. Nothing can save him, but he meets Haruka Asahina, a young racing driver. The boy takes part in F4 races (many are surprised that such races exist) to fulfill his childhood dream and honor his father, who died during the competition. Haruka inspires Kouya with his determination and perseverance, and the man decides to support the poor little team for which the racer competes for.

Obvious advantages

First thing you notice while watching is the successful combination of characters. The typical talented shonen protagonist is overshadowed by the adult, disillusioned Kouya. Viewers can see not only a child's dreams, but also real life, where everything is unrestricted by desire. The plot itself is pretty dynamic. During the first series, we learn the past and present of the heroes, and we begin to understand their motivation and goals. Secondary characters do not look bad either. Each has their own little story, which develops on the background of the main events.

Some people note the interesting theme of the anime. Perhaps everyone has heard of F1 racing, but not many people know about F4. In fact, they are very similar to F1, but the participants are young racers. It is interesting how the creators decided to tell the audience about it. Kouya doesn't know anything about racing, but he's constantly being taught something new, and together with him, viewers learn the details.

The visual design of the series is an additional pleasure. There is a well-done combination of 3D and hand-drawn animation, elaborate backgrounds, and details. And the dynamically drawn races are really enjoyable to watch.

Of course, Overtake! can't offer a radically new experience, and it's still a story about overcoming yourself and achieving ultimate success, but maybe that's why we love sports anime!
