Hot Take: Fire Force Anime is Actually Not That Bad

The anime doesn’t deserve the hate it gets.

Summary:

  • Fire Force often gets unfairly criticized for many reasons.
  • The fanservice is the biggest problem with the series.
  • Outside of that, though, the anime is well-made and entertaining.

Atsushi Ookubo’s Fire Force (Enen no Shouboutai) often gets a lot of criticism. Viewers bring up many points, from excessive fanservice to unfavorable comparisons to his previous manga, Soul Eater. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, you might feel like it’s not worth watching — but that’s not true.

It does have some issues

To be fair, the criticism about fanservice is a fair one. Many fans just don’t want to see ecchi scenes in their battle shounen anime, and while this is not the first series to include them, they are particularly egregious here.

Tamaki’s “lucky pervert” moments, which often put her into embarrassing situations, don’t add anything to the story and just aren’t funny enough, yet the show seems to continue showing them.

There are other issues with the series as well, but they are mostly minor ones. Sometimes, the anime glosses over the explanations of its powers and doesn’t bring them up until very much later on. Some of this content hasn't been adapted yet, and so, certain fights might have left the viewers confused.

It’s actually pretty cool

Outside of that, though? The anime really doesn’t deserve that much criticism. It works really well as a battle shounen series, and that’s what it is supposed to be in the first place. The power system is very unique and cool-looking, and the chemistry between the main cast is great.

Besides, it is really easy to root for the protagonists because the villains are clearly just evil — the anime doesn’t require much thought, and it doesn’t try to be anything other than a fun action series, either.

The comparisons to Soul Eater are very much unfair. Of course, a lot of viewers would be biased towards the earlier work because of nostalgia, and those who got into Fire Force expecting to see another Soul Eater would be really disappointed. That said, the two series are significantly different, and comparing them is not really productive.

Where is the third season?

Besides that, fans often forget that one thing that is actually really good about Fire Force is the visuals. The series boasts great action scenes — the flame powers are very well-animated.

Overall, if you can get past the fanservice parts, Fire Force is genuinely an entertaining battle shounen series. It might not be especially unique, but it’s fun enough. Fans are awaiting the third season — which has been announced some time ago. Sadly, we have no news on it yet.
