Hot Take: JoJo Part 3 Might Actually Be The Worst Part

You probably just don’t remember its shortcomings.

Summary:

  • There are many candidates for the worst part.
  • Stardust Crusaders has a lot of irrelevant fights and “Araki forgot” moments.
  • It’s not bad, but it’s the worst part of JoJo.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken) is one of the most well-known anime franchises in the world. Boasting a dedicated fandom, the series is currently publishing its ninth manga part, with 6 of them being adapted into anime. One of the things it is most known for is Stands: incredibly fun and creative powers used by the characters in the series. They were first introduced in Part 3, Stardust Crusaders, which is still remembered fondly by the fans. Except… it wasn’t as good as people remember it.

Worst JoJo part?

The question of what is the worst JoJo part has existed for decades now. The most common answer is Part 1, which didn’t feature Stands yet, and is perceived as a more boring early installment of the series. That may be true, but Part 1 laid the groundwork for the rest of the series and introduced some core world concepts. Besides, the Victorian gentleman style of Jonathan is just so much fun. Other parts get criticized for different things, for example, Part 5 is often criticized for how overpowered and Gary Stu-like its protagonist, Giorno, is. However, there can be an argument that Stardust Crusaders is just the worst part (although it’s still good).

Problems with Stardust Crusaders

The main issue with Stardust Crusaders is its format. While “monster of the week” series existed since time immemorial, Part 3 of JoJo takes a bit too much time utilizing that formula, taking way too long to get to the actual point. Sometimes, these fights are interesting and cool, sometimes, they are just weird and forgettable. Most people won’t be able to retell off the top of their head how fights against the users of, say, Dark Blue Moon or Bastet went — and in some cases, what those Stands even were. There are also issues of Stands being able to do certain things that were never mentioned again (the classic “Araki forgot” meme). Star Platinum stealing things for Jotaro? Stands are able to shrink, as seen in a fight vs Lovers? And why the hell was J. Geil shown to be able to deflect rain in Polnareff’s flashback, only for this to never be mentioned again?

CGI is not inherently bad

Part 3 is fondly remembered for its vibrant cast of characters, new and unique power system and a crazy final fight. It’s also a source of a ton of memes that still get brought up in the community. However, it is often forgotten how long it actually took the characters to get to their destination, and how irrelevant a lot of what happened actually was in the long term. While it is not bad per se, there is definitely an argument that Stardust Crusaders is the worst part of the series.
