Hot Take: The Ending of JoJo Part 5 is Way Too Cruel

This is one time we might feel bad for the villain.

Spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind, Diavolo ended up being stuck in a loop, forced to experience his death over and over again.
  • Diavolo's crimes are terrible, but they aren't enough to justify this fate, as he's one of the more grounded villains in the series.
  • In the end, this was probably done for thematic reasons.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken) is an iconic series with an extremely loyal fandom. The franchise is known for its large cast of characters with various crazy abilities, and confrontations between them are always fun to watch. Of course, this means some characters would eventually end up dead.

On one hand, we should be happy when villains get what they deserve. On the other hand, in some cases, perhaps this is too much. One of such cases is the end of Part 5, Golden Wind. While the villain, Diavolo, was undoubtedly a terrible person, some fans believe that his fate was way too cruel.

Diavolo's end is exceptionally cruel

After being hit with Gold Experience Requiem, Diavolo ended up being forever stuck in a loop. He was forced to experience his death over and over until eternity, without ever finding a way to escape it. This is, essentially, a fate worse than death — but is it something that Diavolo truly deserved?

There's no doubt that Diavolo was an evil person. He was a mob boss and a murderer with no moral compass. That said, in this sense, he was one of the most realistic villains in JoJo (outside of his crazy and unbelievable backstory).

Someone like that is definitely not the most evil person in the franchise, yet he got the worst fate of all of them.

This is especially jarring especially when you compare him to Dio, who is a power-hungry vampire set on ruling the world. Even in Part 5 itself, there are worse people, like Cioccolata, who tortures and murders people for fun without a clear goal in mind.

This end actually makes sense in the context of the series

It needs to be addressed that this isn't the first time a JoJo villain suffers a fate worse than death. Back in Part 2, Kars was launched into space as a statue, where he eventually ceased thinking. That said, Diavolo's end is still worse.

The reason why Diavolo has to experience death over and over again without ever truly dying is because it is an important thematic part of Golden Wind.

That installment of JoJo is all about defying fate, and having the arc villain be stuck in a loop where he is fated to die no matter what is a perfect end for him… at least thematically.

Diavolo had to go either way

Did Diavolo deserve this fate? Probably not. Did he need to die? Definitely so, and it just happened that his end (which is technically not "death" in its traditional sense) had to have been a particularly terrible one.

Besides, Doppio, his goofy and crazy alternate personality, got to die on his own, so at least he's not stuck in the loop as well.

This is one time we might feel bad for the villain.
