How Anime and Drama Boost Manga Sales: Case of Fermat Kitchen

Almost twice the volumes in circulation in two months?!

Summary:

  • Manga adaptations are known to be the main booster of manga sales.
  • Fermat Kitchen is the BL cooking manga that just received a live-action adaptation.
  • In two months after the live-action's premiere the number of manga volumes in circulation almost doubled.
  • It's a fun series and a nice adaptation.

You remember how people say that any kind of manga adaptation, be it an anime or a live-action, is considered an advertisement for the manga, and its main purpose is to boost the sales of the original and the merchandise. This happened this year with Blue Lock and helped it climb the charts of manga sales to the top, dethroning Shounen Jump comics for the first time in 20 years, as people were pretty hyped about the anime series. But here's another case, one that seems a bit more grandiose considering how niche the work is.

Combine food and math and get some love

We're talking about Fermat Kitchen (Fermat no Ryouri) — a cooking manga about a mathematician Kitada Gaku who lost his purpose in life and got expelled from school and a genius chef Asakura Kai. Gaku meets Kai completely by accident, but this meeting rekindles his interest in something, at least, and he uses his mathematical knowledge to develop new recipes as he studies cooking under Kai's guidance.

The manga premiered in September 2018 and is still being published, with its chapters combined in four volumes. It's a niche work, as it's not only a cooking manga, but it focuses heavily on the relationship between Gaku and Kai that has a romantic undertone and makes it BL.

Live-actions also work as advertisements

The series has received a live-action adaptation by Netflix (named Fermat's Cuisine) that became available in October 2023. The live-action has boosted the sales of the manga tremendously: in two months the amount of copies in circulation increased by 200,000 and reached 500,000. So the number of volumes has almost doubled in only two months just because of the live-action.

It's a drastic change, one that, probably, all the manga authors dream of when they hear news of the upcoming adaptations. And the adaptation is pretty good: it's fun and wholesome, filled with delicious food and genuine feelings. This manga deserves this adaptation, and this manga deserves the attention that the adaptation brought to it.
