How 'Dead Mount Death Play' Fails to Be a Good Reverse Isekai (but Not Completely)

Nothing can save isekai!

Summary:

  • Dead Mount Death Play is an example of reverse isekai.
  • The modern world is not so different from the improvised fantasy Middle Ages.
  • The plot is too complicated and has a lot of unnecessary elements.

Have you ever heard of reverse isekai? If for some reason you haven't, it's when a character is reborn from the fantasy world into the real one. Dead Mount Death Play is a good example. The first season was released this spring, and now the second season is coming out. It seems that the title didn't get much popularity, and now it's going unnoticed. Is isekai scaring off viewers again? Or is it a problem with the plot?

Necromancer in the modern world

The story begins with a battle between a powerful necromancer and the hero. Seconds before his death, the necromancer sends his soul to another world and appears in the body of a Japanese teenager Polka. Yes, this story is not about the hero! Although the necromancer cannot be called a villain. He dreams of a peaceful and quiet life. But he will not find peace even in the modern world. The boy whose body he moved into is being hunted by the hitman Misaki. She has already killed the teenager and was surprised by his quick recovery. With this unusual fight, the necromancer's new life began.

Later, he meets other characters and gets involved in local disputes. It turns out that the modern world is not so different in its cruelty from the improvised fantasy Middle Ages. Dead Mount Death Play combines detective, fantasy and action. There are stories of maniacs, paranormal phenomena and factional confrontations.

Genre abundance is the first problem. Creators very rarely manage to combine so many elements competently. The plot becomes too confusing and there is a lot of unnecessary stuff that has nothing related to the main story. This happened with Dead Mount Death Play too. The slow pace of the narrative also stands out. A large part of the first season is spent introducing the world and characters. Only at the end a small amount of plot appears. The second part continues the development of events, but everything happens very slowly and many actions have no meaning at all.

Despite the complex plot, the world of Dead Mount Death Play isn't interesting. Some elements are simply difficult to catch, and some are hackneyed techniques that the viewers have seen more than once. The characters don't attract much sympathy either. Although there are not many main characters in this anime, most of them are unrevealed. For example, Polka, whose body is used by the main character. He is the third most important character, but the audience knows nothing about him except that he is the heir of a rich clan and a shy teenager.

Nevertheless, Dead Mount Death Play has some strong points. The animation looks modern and doesn’t concede to many titles. Although the plot of the evil hero who turns out to be good is not new, it is interesting to watch the necromancer. His reflections may seem naive, but this character is the most memorable detail of this anime. Perhaps the only one.
