How Does Wind Breaker Compare to Tokyo Revengers, with Both Being Delinquent Anime?

They are more different than they are alike.

Summary:

  • Fans compare Wind Breaker to Tokyo Revengers, with both being delinquent anime.
  • These two are actually very different outside of the setting.
  • Wind Breaker has better visuals and protagonist, but, so far, offers just fights, unlike Tokyo Revengers.

Among the Spring 2024 anime, Wind Breaker might be the most fun one. Sure, it’s not incredibly complex and doesn’t have epic-scale worldbuilding, but it doesn’t need to have any of that. It’s just a delinquent anime where some people have fist-fights, and it’s well-animated, too.

Wind Breaker doesn’t need to be anything more than it already is, but, as it’s rising to popularity, it’s getting compared to other delinquent-themed anime. And, of course, the main point of comparison is Tokyo Revengers, which is arguably the most popular anime like that. So, which one of the two is better?

These Two Belong to Different Genres

First of all, these two are actually fairly different outside of the initial idea of delinquent teenagers fighting each other with fists.

Wind Breaker is about a group of students who fight to protect the city — and how the protagonist joins them in his quest to establish himself as the strongest. Tokyo Revengers focuses on youth gangs, but the actual point of that anime isn’t even the fights.

Indeed, Tokyo Revengers just uses this setting for a fairly elaborate time-travel plot where the protagonist has to fix the present by going to the past — but it proves to be more difficult than it sounds.

It’s really hard to compare them like that when they belong to two different genres, as one is just a fun action series and the other is a mix of action and mystery/thriller. That said, there are some points of comparison that are still possible to make.

Actual Comparison

One thing Tokyo Revengers was arguably never good at — or, at least, never consistently good — is the fights themselves. Wind Breaker has already been praised for its outstanding animation, and while Tokyo Revengers has some good moments, the visuals are not the strongest point of the series.

The protagonist of Tokyo Revengers is also heavily criticized for being a “crybaby” — and Wind Breaker’s protagonist is actually liked by fans. It’s understandable why Takemitchy is not liked at all, but the hate is overblown — a lot of the time, the situation is out of his control.

Still, it’s not like Tokyo Revengers is all bad. Its take on time travel is actually very cool — especially for a shounen series — and its plot, so far, is far more complex. So, it might be a good watch if you want more than just fights.
