Is Headmistress in Ancient Magus' Bride Working Together With Philomela's Grandmother?

Locking innocent students together with the energy thief doesn’t seem very helpful, does it? Unless you are working together with the thief, that is…

The Ancient Magus’ Bride (Mahou Tsukai no Yome) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • In Ep.7, the Headmistress lifts the seal on the College at Philomela’s request.
  • That makes fans wonder if she was any help at all during the case of the energy thief.
  • Sealing the College seemed like a smart idea, and it was done before the Headmistress learned that the book was in the College.
  • Removing the seal made sense for the sake of many lives, but it shows how useless it was to begin with.
  • All the actions of the Headmistress helped Philomela rather than hindered her.

After the seal is lifted in Episode 7, both fans and we are left to wonder if the College’s Headmistress was any help at all in the case of the energy thief. But what if she never meant to help with that case? Let’s discuss.

The Seal

The Headmistress was quick to put a seal on the College when energy thief attacks started. It seemed like a reasonable solution at the time. However, soon after, the Headmistress learned that the book used to steal energy remained in the College. In other words, she knew with some certainty that she was sealing innocent students in College together with the energy thief. Despite that, she didn’t change her decision, and the seal stayed, trapping the potential victims with the thief.

Catching the Thief

Perhaps, you could argue, the Headmistress wanted to catch the thief and needed to keep them trapped in the College. However, even her staff states that she didn’t do much to figure out who the thief was. There were no searches, no interrogations, nothing.

Of course, the Headmistress was not equipped to solve such a problem. But then, she should have found someone who could solve the problem, and she didn’t. To be fair, there are two witches investigating the case, but they are not in the College, where the thief is.

Overall, the Headmistress did surprisingly little, which makes her decisions even more suspicious.

Lifting the Seal

 - image 2

When Philomela breaks down and shows the College that she is the thief, she asks for the seal to be lifted, holding a few students hostage. The Headmistress lifts the seal, and this decision makes sense since the Headmistress has to protect the rest of the students. However, it also makes the seal completely useless. Under the seal, Philomela managed to collect all the energy she needed for her Grandmother before escaping. If anything, the Headmistress helped Philomela.

Indeed, the Headmistress didn’t keep the students safe, and she made zero effort to identify and stop the thief. Fans of the anime find it concerning, but nobody suggests that the Headmistress and Philomela’s grandmother cooperate. Let’s hope that we never get any evidence of that.
