Is Re:Zero Just About Pain and Suffering, and Why Do People Actually Enjoy It?

Yes, Subaru is a great protagonist — many people just misunderstand his purpose in the story.

Summary:

  • Otaku getting into Re:Zero might feel like the series’ fans just want to see Subaru suffer — but that’s not the case.
  • The anime is liked because people sympathize with the characters and like seeing them overcome hardships.
  • It’s also a story with a lot of details and a ton of characters — and Subaru is a great protagonist.

If you saw Re:Zero fans talking about their favorite anime, you probably saw them mention how great of a character Subaru is. When you watch the show, however, he’s not exactly likable. Yeah, that’s the point of the series — he’s obviously flawed and Re:Zero is about his personal growth.

However, the poor guy can’t just catch a break — and a lot of the time, it feels like the fans of the series just enjoy seeing him suffer constantly. That’s not exactly true, however: there are many things to like about Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu).

No, it’s not about enjoying the suffering

First, the obvious part: you don’t need to enjoy Subaru’s suffering to enjoy Re:Zero. Actually, the opposite can be argued: a lot of viewers find the things he goes through sympathetic and actively root for him.

The same can be said about other characters: Subaru is not the only one experiencing hardships. Ultimately, there’s a lot of struggle in Re:Zero, and it’s absolutely normal to see characters progress through the story while overcoming struggles.

Re:Zero is shaping up to be an epic story

Another thing that makes Re:Zero so enticing for many is its fantasy world. Yes, it might not be extremely unique. However, what sets it apart from others is just how detailed it is, and the amount of characters involved.

The epic scale of events is understandable when you realize that the author planned the novels for 12 arcs. The anime has currently covered only 4 of them, so a lot of the content and characters are yet to be introduced.

This adds another reason to like the anime — at times, it almost feels like a mystery series where you have to figure stuff out yourself.

Of course, you shouldn’t forget Subaru himself. Fans claim he’s one of the best isekai protagonists out there, and they’re right. Yes, his behavior might be annoying — and that’s entirely on purpose. He’s a NEET getting out of his own shell who doesn’t know how to interact with people that well.

He gets better, of course, and he has a sympathetic backstory — not to mention the fact that when needed, he can be quite heroic. Yes, he cries a lot, and is afraid of dying (despite going back after death), but almost everyone would be in his situation. Cut him some slack, nobody’s perfect.
