Is The Apothecary Diaries a Romcom With a Dense Main Character Now?

Fans are already sure that Maomao and Jinshi are destined to be together. If only Maomao got the memo…

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • Despite their different positions in the inner palace, fans believe that Jinshi and Maomao will end up together.
  • The hairpin situation upset Jinshi because Maomao did not choose his hairpin. When she reveals what she paid Lihaku for her family visit in very vague terms, Jinshi is devastated.
  • Fans are torn about the meeting in Ep.8. Maomao could be the dense protagonist of a romcom, but a lot of fans are sure that she knows what she is doing.

Fans believe that Jinshi and Maomao are a couple in the making regardless of their different standing in the inner palace (and we secretly hope they will end up together, too!). Episode 8 shows that Jinshi is very upset that Maomao used another’s favor to get a short vacation at home. With how much Jinshi thinks about Maomao, it is already clear that he feels something for her. But Maomao remains a dense romcom protagonist, who does not seem to understand his intentions. Or does she?

The Mystery of Hairpins

The hairpins have been in the spotlight since Episode 5. Maomao does not seem to fully understand their implications. It becomes especially clear when she explains her reasoning behind choosing Lihaku’s hairpin for her home vacation. Maomao says that she did not know how to pay Jinshi back, and Jinshi’s reaction shows that no payment is needed when you have a pin.

Fans have been guessing the meaning of Jinshi’s pin for a while now. We still do not know for a fact what he wanted Maomao to do with it. It’s likely supposed to be used just like Lihaku’s hairpin but without the payment that Maomao provided.

The Night of Blissful Dreams

The fact that Maomao did not choose his hairpin seemed to make Jinshi angry. He even stopped using the polite “watashi” in his speech, switching to “ore” instead. But he was completely devastated when Maomao told him that she paid Lihaku back with a night of blissful dreams. Some fans believe that Maomao was purposefully being vague about what she did to tease Jinshi. But others think that Maomao is just that dense when it comes to reading Jinshi’s reaction.

Poor Jinshi

The Apothecary Diaries is a mystery show, but it has its romcom moments, and Jinshi and Maomao are clearly paired by the viewers and narrative. However, the usually brilliant Maomao seems to fail to understand Jinshi’s intentions at every turn. She might be pretending, of course, but it is fun to assume that Maomao is just that dense of a romantic protagonist. Poor Jinshi.
