Is Yuji the Good Jujutsu Kaisen Protagonist – or Would Yuta Have Been Better?

Is Yuji the Good Jujutsu Kaisen Protagonist – or Would Yuta Have Been Better?

Who will you choose?

Summary:

  • Fans have been criticizing Yuji a lot lately.
  • Yuji is the series' protagonist, and Yuta is the movie's main character.
  • Yuji is undeservedly criticized.

Viewers believe that one of Jujutsu Kaisen's biggest problems is its characters, especially their lack of development. This is generally a very common complaint about modern shonen anime. Because of the fast pace of the story, the creators miss important moments, and sometimes the character is just poorly worked out. If we can turn a blind eye to this in the case of minor characters, things are much more complicated with the main characters.

Fans have been criticizing Yuji a lot lately, but is he really that bad? Can he be considered a good protagonist, or should Akutami Gege have chosen another protagonist, for example, Yuta?

There are two options

Yuji is the series' protagonist, and Yuta is the main character in the full-length movie. They have something in common — both are too kind, but are in a difficult situation because of cursed spirits. They are even both saved from execution by Gojo.

Yuji was an ordinary high school student taking care of his sick grandfather. One day, he encountered cursed spirits, and in order to save his friends, he ate Sukuna’s finger — an incredibly powerful curse. Since then, Yuji's life has gone downhill — people close to him have started dying, not least because of his power (the power that is inside him).

Yuta is also a bearer of destructive power. However, he didn't have much time to live a carefree life. When he was a child, the girl he loved died and turned into a powerful cursed spirit that haunted the boy. She killed anyone who threatened him, and Yuta had no way to stop it.

Should Yuji be replaced?

Both Yuji and Yuta are typical shonen characters. Like many heroes in these series, they have been given incredible powers and are learning to control them. However, Yuji is not a loser without any friends. Yuta, on the other hand, pretty much follows the famous trope. Their importance to the plot is undeniable (though that shouldn't be used as a criterion at all).

Compared to Yuta, Yuji is inferior in power. This is because the destructive power in his body is primarily Sukuna's, while Yuta is naturally strong. Perhaps it's the eternal question of what a shonen hero should be — strong or not so strong. Some people prefer overrated characters, while others think the protagonist should go a long way to gain power.

However, it seems that Yuji is undeservedly criticized. He is a good example of a modern shonen protagonist — still kind and caring, but also very realistic. In the anime, he hasn't had a chance to prove himself yet, but it looks like Episode 21 will change that. Manga fans can confirm, Yuji will play his part in the story.
