It’s truly such a shame he couldn’t.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 premiered this summer and quickly scored impressive ratings in the anime community. Fans were excited to see the past arc of Gojo Satoru and Suguru Geto. The story of two best friends losing their connection and one choosing the path of destruction is nothing new, but in just one episode, Jujutsu Kaisen effectively portrayed this trope in a very cinematic way. Seeing the downfall of Geto, a once righteous curse user dedicated to morals, one can’t help but wonder if there was a way to save him from his darkness.
Well, many fans believe that Geto was doomed from the start, with one of the reasons being the way his Cursed Spirit Manipulation technique works. Having to regularly absorb and consume an endless number of curses derived from the most negative emotions that humans are capable of must have taken a toll on his mental state. Not to mention, they taste like vomit-soaked rags, as Geto once stated.
He chose to endure all of this for the sake of the greater good, but there was always that seed of doubt within him that questioned the validity of such a sacrifice. Witnessing a group of people applauding Rico’s death shook his ideology to the core and haunted Geto’s mind for an entire year. Then, Yu Haibara, a young junior whom Geto saw as a ray of hope, tragically dies, and that further cements Geto’s belief that non-sorcerers are inherently heinous and evil.
Some fans agree that Satoru Gojo could have done more to prevent Geto’s dark descent. Unfortunately, Gojo was focused on his own growth and strength that resulted in Geto going on solo missions and becoming increasingly isolated. Satoru never noticed the signs until it was too late, and that most likely haunted him later on.
The Jujutsu system in place could also be at fault for treating its sorcerers like expendable material. Many fans agree that the higher-ups constantly sending young teenagers on very dangerous missions shows their total disregard for their students. There is no counseling system in place to monitor sorcerers’ mental condition. After all, no one bothered to check on Geto’s visibly deteriorating state, just like no one checked up on Nanami, who left sorcery for a while after Haibara’s death.
Although some fans claim that Geto was always meant to become that way, many believe that things could potentially be different if those close to him had noticed his mental degradation at the right time. However, we will never know for sure. Unfortunately, by the time Geto massacred the entire village, it was already too late to convince him otherwise.
