Jujutsu Kaisen: Sukuna's Characterization Makes Him a Perfect Villain for Yuji

Jujutsu Kaisen: Sukuna's Characterization Makes Him a Perfect Villain for Yuji

These two are polar opposites.

Summary:

  • Sukuna is absolutely evil and only cares about strength.
  • It’s the opposite of Yuji’s mindset.
  • That’s why only Yuji can defeat Sukuna.

Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most popular battle shounen series — and, because of this, one of the most controversial, too. The current controversies come from the current arcs of the manga, which killed off a few important characters that fans loved. Because of that, many are fed up with the series, especially because Sukuna is way too overpowered to be defeated.

While yes, he is overpowered, Sukuna is also not without his flaws. He’s actually a very complex villain — perhaps not by himself, but certainly as an antagonist for Yuji to overcome and defeat.

Sukuna Is Absolutely Evil, and That’s Fine

Ryomen Sukuna is the strongest jujutsu sorcerer of the past. He’s incredibly selfish and only cares about power. He will kill others for his own amusement, and his mindset can be summed up as “nothing but power matters.” According to him, the weak die and the strong survive — nothing less, nothing more.

It’s not like he has some deep issues that make him believe that. While he’s undoubtedly crazy (at least, by normal person standards), he isn’t driven to his ideology by his tragic past or anything.

He’s perfectly happy and content with being the strongest. He’s evil, and cannot be redeemed at all — though he doesn’t actually need redemption. He needs to be stopped at any cost.

These Two Are Each Other’s Opposites — That’s What Makes JJK So Special

Yuji is Sukuna’s polar opposite — that’s what makes Sukuna such a good antagonist. Compared to Sukuna, who is selfish and doesn’t consider anyone a friend, Yuji relies on his friends a lot. In fact, it can be argued that his friendships are one of his greatest strengths.

Because of this, Yuji is the only one who can defeat Sukuna. He’s the only one who can battle that selfish ideology, and it would be a great message — yes, being strong is good, but that strength means nothing if you only live for yourself.

Jujutsu Kaisen Explores Its Themes Very Well

Jujutsu Kaisen may be criticized for many things, but character writing is definitely not one of those. In fact, a diverse cast of great characters is why people like JJK so much — even though many of them get killed off too quickly.

Many villains in JJK are showing how negative emotions and cruelty affect others. Despite the series having a reputation for being “dark” for a shounen, it actually explores interesting themes and has positive messages.
