Just Another Horror Anime List

If you like anime and horror, check out this list. Who knows, it might have your next favorite!

A lot of people like horror, but there are shades and flavors to it, and we want to select a few options based on several types of horror. Please take a look at this list; maybe you find your future favorite in there.

Shiki: Vampire Horror

A vampire horror mystery, Shiki shows a series of deaths that shake the town of Sotoba. They might have been connected to an epidemic, according to the town's hospital director, Doctor Toshio Ozaki. After all, a family settled into the small town right before these occurrences; they could have carried a pathogen. Soon, though, Toshio Ozaki figures out that there are supernatural forces at play. It was not an epidemic; it was shiki, "corpse demons." If you like vampires, especially both pretty and creepy ones, as well as murder mysteries, this is a show for you.

Junji Ito Maniac: Cosmic and Body Horror

Junji Ito has been very popular lately, and for a good reason. In January 2023, Netflix aired Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, which had been eagerly awaited by the fans. The series is an anthology, and there is no one single story to characterize the series properly. The scores for the episodes range, too, with the first episode getting only 4.6 on IMDB (as of writing). At the same time, the third episode got a 7.1. It looks like people have a lot of mixed feelings about the series, but the average score is above five. So if you are a Junji Ito fan and you have not watched the series yet, it is worth a try. And if you don't know much about Junji Ito, watch it for sure! Just be prepared for cosmic and body horror.

Black Butler: Mystery Horror

Black Butler bridges genres. There is a lot of comedy and drama, but at its core the anime is a mystery with significant horror elements set in Victorian England with a supernatural twist. The anime is about to receive a new arc based on manga (that latter part was not always the case; the series has a history of coming up with its own plot). This anime is for you if you love demons and historical thrillers.

Hellsing Ultimate: Bloody Horror

Hellsing Ultimate follows the manga quite closely, which is a major advantage that the previous iteration of Hellsing anime did not have. However, it is also very, very bloody. Blood is rarely scary to the modern generation, but there are obviously exceptions. It might also be fun, in a macabre way, to watch Alucard demolish his enemies. If you love guns and enjoy vampires that are downright scary but also occasionally used for fanservice, Hellsing Ultimate is for you.

In summary, the flavors of horror are so numerous, we will not even try to make one cohesive list. Instead, we will keep making smaller lists to familiarize you with existing and future horror.
