Kaiju No. 8 is criticized for character design a lot.
It was better in the manga.
It’s difficult to like characters that look like that.
Back when there were just a couple of visuals for Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou), the main conversation topic wasn’t the plot of the series, its cast or its quality, it was the character design of the anime.
Then the first trailers started coming out, but this one thing remained the same: the characters looked weird and failed to be visually pleasing.
It might feel like a very shallow complaint, since the story and character development are much more important than the way characters look, and Kaiju No. 8 is undoubtedly a great show with exciting action and hilarious humor. But the picture always matters, and we cannot deny that.
Manga Designs Are Better
When the anime started airing on April 13, 2024, it was clear that the character designs hadn’t gone anywhere. Everyone looked exactly the same way they did in the visuals and trailers, and it was upsetting.
A number of anime-onlys thought that it was a manga thing, and this is just the author’s style, but it turned out to be wrong. The art style of the manga is much more appealing than that of the anime.
Mina is the character that suffered the most, it seems. There have been complaints about her jumpsuit, as it was much more interesting in the manga and a little bit more sexualized, since her shoulders were bare there.
Her anime design is nothing like that. Her suit looks just the way you expect a Defence Force member’s suit to look, and that might be a good thing, but then again, the manga had more personality and peculiar details.
Characters’ faces also suffered a lot. The manga does face impressions better and characters seem more alive there. It’s especially important for a character like Mina, who, as it now feels, is going to lack emotions and be another silent warrior type.
Still, it doesn’t mean that the character design makes Kaiju No. 8 unwatchable. It’s an outstanding show, and one of the best of Spring 2024. It keeps receiving positive reviews and impressions, the MyAnimeList score is 8.26, which is quite high, and the story is very enjoyable, even despite it featuring a lot of generic shounen tropes.
However, it does mean that there’s room for improvement for Kaiju No. 8. It’s difficult to really like certain characters for now because of how they look, but if the animation studio fixes this issue (in Season 2 perhaps?), the anime will become even better.
