Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou) is an upcoming science fiction anime based on a manga series written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto. The manga started back in 2020, and is still ongoing. It explores the world where monsters (or kaiju) exist and appear all around Japan, causing disasters.
Monsters destroying Japan
The Defense Corps risks their lives to fight the dangerous monsters. Kafka Hibino is a 32-year-old man, who dreams of joining the military and being one of the brave heroes that save the world from kaiju, but he fails in his attempts to do so. He’s left with a much less satisfying job, which is a sweeper, a person who’s there to get rid of the remains of defeated monsters. After a small monster forces its way in through Kafka’s mouth, the man turns into a humanoid monster. And now he’s given another chance at fulfilling his dreams of fighting kaiju.
The first concept art and a teaser were previously released, and they got fans having mixed feelings. The initial arts looked rather questionable, and people admitted disliking them. However, the trailer fixed the situation, and even got the viewers excited a bit. They praise Production I.G for making kaiju 2D instead of using the commonly hated CGI and say that the video looks much better than everything that was shown before.
Jump Festa 2024
Kaiju No. 8 stage event is going to take place during Jump Festa 2024. On the second day of the convention, December 17th, the main voice cast of the anime adaptation, Masaya Fukunishi, Wataru Katoh and Asami Seto, will make an appearance and perform a live reading. On top of that, some additional information about the series is going to be revealed, so stay tuned.
The series is currently not getting much hype, to be honest. Manga readers don’t think it’s a terrible experience, no, but they admit that it’s nothing extraordinary. If you like huge monsters and great fights, there’s a high chance that you’ll find Kaiju No. 8 enjoyable, but don’t expect that it will become the greatest series you’ve ever seen.
