Konosuba Season 3 Trailer Just Dropped: What to Expect

Be prepared for the resurgence of popularity of Konosuba-related memes.

Summary:

  • Season 3 of Konosuba was announced a while ago, and we just got a trailer confirming the anime for Spring 2024 season.
  • Fans have been asking for the anime to get a sequel for years now, despite already getting a spin-off series about Megumin.
  • The studio behind the anime is different from those of the previous TV seasons and the movie — but the staff is mostly the same.

Konosuba used to be one of the most popular anime in the late 2010s. With it being a parody of the isekai genre, its comedy quickly became loved by many otaku. Despite that, however, all the cast members are actually charming in their own ways.

After two seasons, there was a considerable amount of silence before a movie was announced and released — and after that we got a spin-off about Megumin, but no proper sequel to the movie.

Obviously, fans were excited about Season 3, which was announced for 2024 — and with the new PV, we know the date, as well — it’s airing in the spring season. Fans seem to have received the trailer positively, and that bodes well for the anime.

Years without proper continuation

The fandom is usually overjoyed when a beloved anime gets a sequel after years without new content. Konosuba isn’t the exception: the movie that adapted Volume 5 of the light novels was released back in 2019 — after which, fans were almost begging for a sequel.

A spin-off series isn’t quite the same: yes, Megumin is arguably the most popular character of the series, but it’s just not the same fun without the full cast — no wonder her anime went relatively unnoticed. From the trailer it looks like the third season will cover Volume 6 of the LN — and probably Volume 7, given the pace of the previous seasons.

The animation studio changes once again

Many fans were concerned about (yet another) studio change. The first two seasons were animated by Deen — while the movie was made by J.C.Staff. The staff members, however, were mostly the same between those, to the point where many fans didn’t even notice the change.

The third season, just like the spin-off, is animated by Drive — a relatively unknown new studio. As such, there were some concerns about the animation quality, but the PV for S3 looks almost the same as the rest of the series (maybe the art is a little sharper). It seems that the concerns were for naught: the staff is still remaining largely the same, keeping the anime’s look consistent.

Concerns about series’ popularity

Will Konosuba be as popular as it was back in the late 2010s? Probably not, but it’s still going to be one of the biggest things of the season. With many people being so tired of isekai anime they won’t even watch a parody of it anymore — as well as many otaku quitting anime altogether in the years between the releases.

The franchise isn’t quite as popular as it was. It’s still probably going to spawn a ton of memes just like back in the days, and we’re all up for it.
