Land of the Lustrous Manga Has Ended — Any Chances for Anime S2 Now?

Land of the Lustrous Manga Has Ended — Any Chances for Anime S2 Now?

Well, we can always hope.

Summary:

  • The Land of the Lustrous manga has finally ended, and fans are noticing interesting symbolism in the last chapter.
  • They’re also asking for another season of the anime.
  • However, there’s currently no announcement.

Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni) has had a dedicated fanbase for years. Despite the manga taking multiple breaks — at some points fans were worried if it was ever going to be continued — it finally finished with Chapter 108 on April 25.

While the last arc was somewhat controversial (due to the heavy amount of symbolism and somewhat bizarre plot), fans are still happy to see it concluded. However, they are also getting curious about a possible continuation for the anime.

The Symbolism in the Manga Finale Release Date

First of all, the very date of the ending of the manga is symbolic. As Japanese users on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out, the date of the release of the final chapter coincided with a sighting of the Pons–Brooks comet.

And, sure enough, a similar comet was noticed in the final chapter of the manga — and the color of the real-life prototype resembles the color scheme of Phosphophyllite. This is all supported by the fact that Haruko Ichikawa stated that she “finished the manga on time,” prompting fans to think that the hiatuses were planned, too.

Moreover, the number of chapters is also symbolic. 108 is a very important number in Buddhism, prominent in many texts and traditions. With how heavily Land of the Lustrous referenced Buddhism in its final arcs, there’s no way that's coincidental.

So, Can We Get a Second Season Now?

Symbolism in the manga aside, fans really want the anime to get a sequel. It was very well-received back in the day — even the CG was praised for once. As such, it was quite surprising that the anime never got a sequel, considering its popularity.

The first season ended mid-arc too, which prompted fans to ask for a sequel even more. Studio Orange, however, has been busy with different projects recently, such as Beastars and Trigun: Stampede.

With Beastars getting its final season at the end of 2024, fans are once again looking at Land of the Lustrous. Perhaps after that, the studio will go back to the work that made them famous in the first place — or at least, fans hope so.

Still, if the anime gets a second season, it’s going to presumably be a one-cour. It will need two of those to fully adapt the manga. Land of the Lustrous is popular enough that another season is not off the table, but there’s no announcement currently, so we can only hope.
