Beastars Season 3 Finally Gets a Long-Awaited Update, but Fans Are Not Happy

Beastars Season 3 Finally Gets a Long-Awaited Update, but Fans Are Not Happy

Apparently, the last arc of the manga is a disaster.

Summary:

  • The third season of Beastars will be the final one.
  • It will be split-cour, releasing on Netflix from 2024 onward.
  • Many source readers feel the last arc was disappointing.
  • Studio Orange is making the anime once again.

Beastars has been a huge hit with anime fans. Despite its initially wacky premise — issues within anthropomorphic animal society and within a high school drama club specifically — the anime quickly amassed a huge following due to its amazing execution.

If there was one issue with Season 1, it’s that it was too short. Fortunately, the second season was announced later, and at its end, there was an announcement for a third one. However, since then, three years have passed, and we had no news on the third season of the anime — until now.

It will fully adapt the remainder of manga

The third season of Beastars has been confirmed to be a season — not a movie. It has also been confirmed to fully adapt the remainder of the manga, though fans already expected that. In fact, it will have two cours, but they will be split.

Yes, we’re getting “Final Season Part 2” again, just like we did with Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin). Both parts will be released on Netflix, with the first one coming out this year — although we don’t know the date yet.

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for the series mentioned that the final season of the Beastars anime will start in 2024 — but since it will be split-cour, it will probably not finish until 2025. While it is on Netflix, we don’t know yet if it will air weekly or have batch releases.

Fans, however, are skeptical about the anime pulling off a proper finale. The ending of the manga has been considered disappointing, with some calling it a trainwreck. There’s no faith in the studio changing the storyline, and source readers, while glad to see the manga being properly adapted, want the finale changed at least in some ways.

Anime-only fans, however, feel that source fans are overreacting. It’s common for manga readers to hate the ending of the series if it didn’t end exactly the way they liked. As such, they are cautiously optimistic about the new season.

Who is making the anime?

The first key visual for the final season of Beastars has already been revealed, and the trailer will be shown at Netflix’s panel at AnimeJapan tomorrow. As expected, Studio Orange is returning to produce the anime once again — they worked on the first two seasons of the series.

While CGI is usually criticized in anime, Beastars is one of the rare exceptions. Fans actually love how the anime looks, with the 3D CGI giving it a unique style. It’s also miles better than the same kind of 3D we see in many other anime — there’s a reason why Studio Orange is considered to have the best CGI in the industry by some fans.

However, with Studio Orange working on — and supposedly finishing — the adaptation of Beastars, other questions start to arise.

Most notably, the studio’s first major CGI work was actually Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni). It was also praised for its great use of CGI, but the first season of the anime ended practically nowhere — and there was no announcement for any kind of sequel.

With Beastars finishing, and the manga for Land of the Lustrous being near the end of its last arc, fans wonder if that series can get a full adaptation as well. After all, it desperately needs a sequel.

Fans shouldn’t be so optimistic, however: the first season aired in 2017, and there weren’t any plans to continue it back then.

Do you think another season of Land of the Lustrous is possible?

What do fans think?

Some fans might be concerned about the pacing — after all, the remaining two arcs of the manga are pretty huge in size. Together, they are 97 chapters long — and many wonder if such a huge number of chapters can even be adapted into two cours.

That said, this would actually be the same pace as the rest of the anime had. The first two seasons adapted 99 chapters as well and were pretty well-received — there’s no reason to suspect the third one will rush anything if the first two weren’t rushed.

There is, however, an opinion that the ending of the manga itself was rushed, which might become a problem in the anime — but for anime-only viewers, it’s impossible to tell yet.

Overall, the full adaptation that Beastars is getting is great for the fans of the series regardless of their opinion on the last arc. Back in the day, full adaptations were way less common, and many anime ended on cliffhangers or had subpar anime-original finales.

A beloved manga like Beastars being adapted well is a blessing for fans. Some of them even suspect the original Beast Complex manga — the debut work of Paru Itagaki, which introduced the world of Beastars — might be adapted at some point in the future.

While that’s just wishful thinking, at least we’re getting the main story concluded in the anime properly.
