Like It Or Not, Fan Service Is Crucial For Anime

Please, accept it already.

Fan service is something that is permanently hated among many anime fans, but we should develop a different approach. Yes, fan service can be annoying sometimes, it has zero purpose for the plot, it is made for attention and for money. The key word is money. Without money, nothing can function normally. The same goes for anime.

Without proper funding, artists, writers, composers, and other people from the anime industry would retire. Titles wouldn’t receive enough attention due to lack of advertising, everything would go bankrupt. That’s why fan service exists.

There are several types of fan service — references, erotic and merchandise.

Let’s talk about references first — they can be anything. Parodies of the most famous scenes, some small details in the environment or characters. For example, some of the JoJo references have become memes and are used in many titles to entertain the audience. Erotic fan service includes beach episodes, “pantsu shots” and other shots. They are hated and loved at the same time. And finally, merchandise. This includes almost everything you can imagine — figurines, disks, blankets, toys, books and so on. It’s a real cash-grab in a good way: the audience is happy because they’ve got a new character figure, and the studio is happy because they made more money.

Some people also hate fan service because they think it is useless, steals screen time, and is probably just made for money. But think of it from the other perspective — don’t you want to see some small detail from your favorite title in another one? Don’t you want to relax during the beach episode before or after the most brutal plot twists? Or don’t you want to get an action figure of your beloved character? Just imagine it standing on your manga shelf. If you agree with at least one of these questions, you should also understand that you are helping the anime studio to live and make money, so they can provide better content in the future and pay their employees higher wages. We should accept fan service because now we won’t get rid of it. It is a cash-grab, but in a good way, which may be annoying, but without it we won’t be able to enjoy our favorite anime.
