Looks Like Jujutsu Kaisen Isn't About Tragic Love, but This Story Hurts You

Finally, a little portion of love…

Jujutsu Kaisen spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • There are almost no love plotlines in Jujutsu Kaisen.
  • Relationship development is not possible with fast dynamics.
  • The only well-observed love story is the relationship between Miwa and Mechamaru.

In the Jujutsu Kaisen latest episode, fans weren't surprised by Yuji's emotional loss scene or Todo's brilliant comeback. We've had it all before. The truly touching scene was in the train, where we finally saw Miwa's reaction to Mechamaru's death. It finally brought something new to the show. Something that Jujutsu Kaisen viewers have been missing — and that's love.

No place for love

Although Jujutsu Kaisen tries every possible way to involve the audience emotionally, Akutami Gege, the author of the story, does not use the most obvious means. There are almost no love lines in this anime, and even when some hints are shown, they remain in the shadows of the main events. The pace of the story and the atmosphere don't seem to suggest a romantic relationship at all. Such a fast dynamic doesn't allow for conveying the relationship development well enough, so Gege doesn't even try.

Nevertheless, Jujutsu Kaisen does have some touches of romance. The most obvious one is Yuta Okkotsu and Rika Orimoto. Much of Jujutsu Kaisen 0's plot seems to be built around their relationship. But it is unusual. The point is that Rika became a curse after her death when they were children. Even though we are shown how their relationship develops, it's very hard to empathize with them because Rika has become a terrifying creature. And it's still not the main plot, but rather a side story. It's almost impossible to find love lines in the series, and Nobara's sympathy for Yuji and Gojo's feelings for Riko Amanai remain a subject of fan discussion.

Heartbreaking story

Perhaps the only well-observed love story is the relationship between Miwa and Mechamaru, which was revealed in the second season. This plot is tragic considering that Mechamaru is physically weak. In fact, the characters never met, and all their communication was through a robot, but they still became close.

The first part of this story was shown during Mechamaru's battle with Mahito. Mechamaru managed to regain his body by conspiring with the cursed spirits, and it looked like he would finally be able to see his friends, but he died. During the battle, we see Miwa sitting at Kyoto Academy having a heart-to-heart with the robot, but we know that Mechamaru is dead. This makes Miwa's words about visiting the sorcerer even sadder.

In the last episode, after a long time, we finally see Miwa's reaction to the news of Mechamaru's death. One of the marionettes that Mechamaru used to tell Yuji the news appeared to the girl. It was a very emotional moment when the characters finally confessed their feelings. And it hurts even more when you realize that nothing can be done with it anymore.
