1. Lu Over the Wall, 2017
High school student Kai moves with his father from Tokyo to a small fishing village. The only thing that makes the teenager happy in his dull school life is composing music and posting it online.
When Kai's classmates find out about his hobby, they suggest he form a band called Sieren. On the island where the boys gather to rehearse, the boy meets the beautiful Lu, who understands him like no one else. But there is one detail: Lu is not a human, but a mermaid.
2. Flavors of Youth, 2018
The film is made in the popular anime genre of the almanac, which consists of several short films linked by theme, place, or time. At the heart of Flavors of Youth are stories of growing up and leaving behind illusions.
A student in Beijing dreams of finding the childhood noodles he ate with his grandmother in the village many years ago; a model in Guangzhou tries to balance career and family; an aspiring architect in Shanghai finds a love letter on an audio cassette given to him by a friend.
3. Blame!, 2017
The action takes place in the distant future, where a rapidly spreading infection has caused humans to lose contact with robots. As a result of a code error, mechanical builders aimlessly rebuild the city, and guards who are supposed to protect the borders exterminate the locals.
A group of people manage to survive and hide in a closed settlement. This is where the refugees live, periodically venturing out into the outside world in search of food. One day, the chosen hero Killy arrives – he will give the power over the machines back to the people.
4. Miss Hokusai, 2015
Based on the historical manga of the same name, this animated movie tells the story of 23-year-old O-Ei, the daughter of artist Tetsuzo. The girl inherited her father's talent and often helps him by creating elegant paintings, but without her signature.
In the future, the man will be known as Katsushika Hokusai, the author of one of the most famous Japanese prints, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, but for now he is looking for a commission that will satisfy his thirst for beauty.
5. The Garden of Words, 2013
Director Makoto Shinkai is known for his movie Your Name, which became the highest grossing anime in the history of cinema. The master also had a hand in this movie: he wrote the story and script himself, came up with the storyboards, animated the keyframes and helped with the editing.
The Garden of Words is a short sketch about the relationship between 15-year-old future shoemaker Takao and mysterious woman Yukari. They spend every day of the summer together, but only when it rains.
