Mirai Nikki and Its Fans: A Love-Hate Relationship

There is a lot to hate about Mirai Nikki, but it still has its fans.

Mirai Nikki can be argued to have a relatively complex plotline (or several), powerful female characters, and some very nice animation. Why is it hated so much?

The truth is, there are a lot of reasons, and each of them can become a dealbreaker for different people. The main characters might be off, especially the female lead, who is a yandere, and the male lead, who is very easily spooked and brought to tears (at least during the first episodes, which you'll see if you give up in the middle). Logic is not always there, and some characters have rather unexpected character arcs (Minene Uryu, what have they done to you?). There is a lot of blood and death. And then, there are rather complex, rather sensitive topics, and they are not handled very well.

But wait, maybe it was all done on purpose?

"So here's what I think on that matter: If you hated the characters, you actually got the point of Mirai Nikki." wrote Reddit user DarkFuzz.

A compelling argument can be made that, at the very least, the character flaws were intentional. The anime might have been purposefully crafted to make you hate every character because their ideas of godhood should disappoint you. That idea also implies that in trying to make a statement about anti-theism, Mirai Nikki thinks too much of itself and forgets that nothing overrides the primary objective of anime, which is simply to entertain. To be fun.

And that is why, in the end, fans of Mirai Nikki exist. They had fun. They might not have liked something about the anime, and they will readily admit its flaws, but something about the anime was fun enough not to focus on all the bad things.

Some people love yanderes, and Yuno is the queen of yanderes. Some may enjoy the animation, especially in battles. Some may like to untangle the plot. They had fun, and all the criticism in the world will not change it — and should not change it. If you like anime that others hate, it's alright.

Another important thing to remember here is that while Mirai Nikki might touch on some profound topics, people might just drop it halfway through if they do not like it. As a result, it is hardly an effective way to convey wisdom.

Discussing Mirai Nikki is very interesting, and an explainer of the plot is in order, but for the time being, we will point out that, unfortunately, way too many people did not have fun with the anime.
