Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions (Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri) is a detective anime about a not particularly capable investigator and his talented partner. It's coming out this season and has surprised us more than once recently with its twists. Episode 9 was amazing. It seemed like the anime was going in a different direction, but a new episode was released lately and it looks like the anime returned to its usual mode. Why did the creators decide not to develop the main plot and bring Totomaru back to where he started? Or is it not as it seems?
Looked like a good decision
The Case of the Island Observatory Murder took up three episodes, unlike the other series where one or two episodes were devoted to a single crime. There was a lot of development between the main characters, a complete change in Totomaru's personality, and even the first steps towards the main plot. Viewers even got a glimpse of a possible series antagonist.
Episode 9 changed the whole series. Totomaru finally showed his skills. He was even able to solve the crime himself. Originally, Totomaru was portrayed as a loser who worked hard but didn't understand anything about his job. Ron was the one who helped him and was responsible for solving the mysteries. In this episode, he became the main suspect in the crime and was unable to fulfill his role. But it turned out that Totomaru handled the case. It seemed like the anime had taken an interesting turn and we might even see some friendly competition between the characters.
Breaking expectations
Episode 10 was recently released. The characters returned from the mysterious island where the events of the previous series took place. Instead of developing the main plot, we got a new case which is hardly related to the protagonists and a new character – a journalist who is obsessed with Totomaru. It's hard to tell if she is connected to the main mystery of the story. Most likely she's not. She's probably just another episodic character. The case itself is not different from other occasional investigations shown before.
Not only the story, but the characters themselves are back to their usual state. The audience once again saw the panicked, clumsy Totomaru and the brilliant, cold-blooded Ron. Totomaru tried to help with the investigation, but it was nothing like the previous episode. Will we see the return of the smart and determined protagonist? Ron should probably get into trouble again to make the series better.
