'My Wife Has No Emotion' Anime Announced: A Human x Robot Romance?

'My Wife Has No Emotion' Anime Announced: A Human x Robot Romance?

You might be surprised, but it’s not the first one.

Summary:

  • My Wife Has No Emotion is getting an anime adaptation this summer.
  • The manga focuses on a romance between a single guy and his android housekeeper.
  • It’s not the first anime that focuses on a human/robot romance.

It feels that every year we get wilder and wilder ideas turned into anime. To some fans, My Wife Has No Emotion (Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga Nai) is a part of that trend.

The anime adaptation of the manga by the same name was just announced — and it features a romance between a human and… his robot housekeeper? Yeah, you heard that right.

What is it about?

The anime is going to focus on a single guy, Takuma, who is too burnt out to take care of his house duties. Because of that, he gets a robot, Mina, who will perform those for him — and she’s so good at it that Takuma jokes about her becoming his wife. However, Mina takes the joke at face value — and the romance slowly develops from there.

Sounds weird? Well, you aren’t exactly wrong. That said, the idea of sentient AI and how different it perceives the world from humans has been around for a while. It also has been explored in anime many times, and today, it is more relevant than ever.

It’s not the first one

The anime is not as unique as you might think it is. We already had human/robot romance anime, and they were actually a trend — Chobits and Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden really kickstarted it in the 00s.

It was a thing even before that, as older fans may remember anime like Saber Marionette J, I Dream of Mimi (Buttobi!! CPU) and My Dear Marie (Boku no Marie).

However, this trend has been dead for a while. It seems that recently unusual romance anime have been becoming a trend: people are really fed up with generic romcoms and love triangles and want something unusual.

What do fans think?

Fans are generally excited about this adaptation. Despite a weird premise, it looks surprisingly wholesome and cute — and can be a nice break from clichéd anime we have been seeing recently.

Sadly, there are still some significant concerns about this adaptation. The anime is announced for July 2024, which is extremely sudden there are just a few months before it airs. This might potentially indicate issues with the animation production.

The studio, Tezuka Productions, being already busy with The Fable this spring and The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses (Megami no Café Terrace) S2 in summer doesn’t help either. Yes, the trailer for the latter looked like it improved animation from that of S1, but that makes the concerns about animation in My Wife Has No Emotion even more valid.
