No Fights? No Problem! Despite Expectations, Fans Are Not Disappointed With Episode 10 of Frieren

As the last episode of the Aura Arc, fans expected Episode 10 to have an epic battle between Frieren and Aura. They didn’t get it, but they are not disappointed in the slightest!

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • Ep.10 finished the Aura Arc without much fighting and with a lot of flashbacks.
  • Fans are far from dissatisfied; they loved the ending of the arc.
  • The flashbacks show how Frieren learned to hide her powers. She taught it to Fern as well. This trick helped her overcome Aura easily.

Expectations

Episode 10, along with the whole Aura Arc was hyped up with promotional materials and tweets from people working on the show. From the promotional materials, it was not clear if fighting would happen, but Episode 9 left Frieren alone against Aura and her army of beheaded corpses. As a result, fans expected some action. Those expectations were further supported since in Episode 9, both Fern and Stark got their battles, which fans loved. In the end, many fans admit to expecting some action in Episode 10.

Reality

In reality, Frieren fights the army of Aura off-screen, which Aura mentions when she says that she wanted Frieren to lose some mana so that she could use the Scales of Obedience on the elf. That it happens off-screen is a little disappointing, but fans are too distracted by everything else to be upset.

In a flashback, which explains Frieren’s hatred of demons (who destroyed her entire village), we learn that demons are easy to deceive, which Frieren does by hiding her mana. Fans note that demons are really into showing off their mana. When Lügner learns from Fern that both she and Frieren hide their true potential, he gets angry and calls them undeserving of the title of mage, so it is clearly a big deal as far as demons are concerned.

Deserving or not, Frieren wins the mana contest, and the Scales Of Obedience turn on Aura, making her submit to Frieren’s will. Frieren, looking rather disinterested, which fans loved, simply orders her to kill herself. Aura resists for a few moments, and then does as she is told. What a plot twist!

Fan Reactions

Fans really loved this ending to the Aura Arc. They found it satisfying that Aura fell victim to her own tools, as well as the belief that every mage goes around parading their power. They liked Lügner’s anger as well, especially since Lügner is quite the liar himself, but gets offended when someone tricks him.

Fans were also very happy to see Frieren’s flashbacks. Learning about her backstory and relationship with Flamme was very satisfying. In the end, both Flamme and Frieren believe that suppressing mana is trickery, but their mutual hatred of demons makes them willing to hide their true potential.
