Now That We're Getting a One Piece Remake, Can We Have One for Naruto as Well?

Now That We're Getting a One Piece Remake, Can We Have One for Naruto as Well?

Spoiler: probably no, but it’s okay to dream.

Summary:

  • An announcement of One Piece remake prompted fans to ask for other remakes, including Naruto.
  • While Naruto had an HD rerun on Japanese TV, that’s not a remake at all, and not what fans are asking for.
  • There’s currently no announcement for any Naruto remake, and nothing indicates that it will get one.

“The One Piece” is the title of the upcoming remake of One Piece, made by Wit Studio. Announced out of nowhere, it left anime fans confused about its purpose and target audience. However, it also got fans very excited — and not just for the new series only. With a currently ongoing project receiving a remake which is probably going to air alongside it, it obviously got otaku asking: what if other series got that treatment as well? One particular example is Naruto — with the original adaptation being iconic, it also gets criticized for its filler content.

Fans have expectations for a reason

Technically, Naruto is in a similar situation to One Piece. Yes, the original series ended years ago, but Boruto’s first part recently finished airing — and yet fans are asking for a Naruto remake. The common desires of fans include removing the filler content, fixing the pacing issues (which are nowhere as bad as those of One Piece, but Naruto isn’t devoid of them, either), and modernizing the animation. Such a project, however, would be incredibly ambitious, and there’s nothing currently indicating that something like that is even planned.

Naruto had a rerun on Japanese TV, but that’s not what fans are asking for

While it has never aired in the West, the first Naruto anime had a rerun in Japan called Naruto Shounen-hen — which is essentially the same anime but remastered in HD. It’s not what One Piece remake is going to be, however, and definitely isn’t what fans are asking for. It didn’t really change any content or remove the fillers — it just had new opening and ending themes.

The new Naruto special (that’s been postponed from 2023 to 2024) isn’t announced to be a remake — and definitely isn’t going to be long enough to be one. As such, there’s currently no version of Naruto out there that cuts the filler content, which alienates some fans from the franchise.

A Naruto remake is unlikely

The fact that One Piece got a remake like that is unprecedented. Just because this is happening to a popular series doesn’t mean it’s going to become a trend. Yes, it’s okay to dream, but fans should not get their hopes up for no reason.

Baseless speculations aren’t going to get the fans anywhere, and there are no current announcements for another adaptation of Naruto. Yes, the Boruto sequel is in the works, and those who are following the series will have to settle for that for now. As for the original anime? Yes, it has its issues, but it still attracts many new fans — which indicates it probably did something right.

Spoiler: probably no, but it’s okay to dream.
