Okamoto Kitchen is an anime-themed food truck in Los Angeles. We mean, literally — if you live in LA or are visiting, you can check their menu of Japanese-style curry, fried chicken and rice buns — in person, or via Uber Eats. Also, they’ve got anime merchandise, and frequently attend anime conventions.

And now, there’s also a food truck-themed anime about this anime-themed food truck. Wrap your head around this one.

Okamoto Kitchen (the anime, not the real-life truck) is a 10-episode OVA, featuring over-the-top action, fast-paced races for parking spots and shounen-esque battles using foodstuffs. Just look at the trailer!

This is a collaborative project between many industry giants. Studio Magic Bus (Yo-Kai Watch! and Tensei Kizoku no Isekai Boukenroku: Jichou wo Shiranai Kamigami no Shito) is handling layouts and keyframe animations, in-betweens and paints are done by Studio Nine Lives (worked on Castlevania and 2nd season of Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu), character designs are done by (Seihou Bukyou Outlaw Star and Hikari no Ou), while the official dub features many industry professionals, including Christina Vee, Kimlinh Tran and Faye Mata.

It’s always fun to see Western companies using anime as a medium for their promotions. McDonald’s JUST went viral with their short (but sweet) slice-of-life anime ads, after all. Still, it’s much more surprising to see a smaller company turn to anime for its promotion — let alone make an entire anime series out of it!

All 10 episodes of Okamoto Kitchen will be released just in time for this Thanksgiving — and will also be screened on November 18th at Anime NYC 2023.

We’ve seen this before...

Now look, food anime is nothing new — from Shokugeki no Soma to Yakitate!! Japan, there are plenty of anime with food as their main theme. Service industry anime with a weird twist is also a common enough occurrence, be it Blend S, or Akiba Maid War (Akiba Meido Sensou). But we’ve seen something very similar to Okamoto Kitchen before, and not in a way you think.

Bigtop Burger is an animated web series about a food truck, made by Worthikids, and freely available on YouTube. This food truck is clown-themed, and its staff also goes through car chases and epic battles against competing food trucks, with weird occurrences in-between. It might not be an anime, but it IS fun.

There’s over a week left until Okamoto Kitchen’ screening at Anime NYC 2023, so if you really want to see something with a similar premise in the meantime — Bigtop Burger is right there. Waiting. Watching.
