Okay, Boruto Sequel Manga is Ongoing, But Where is the Rumored Season 2 of the Anime?

Okay, Boruto Sequel Manga is Ongoing, But Where is the Rumored Season 2 of the Anime?

Well, it was even officially announced, but we know nothing about it.

Summary:

  • Boruto was seen as an unneeded sequel at first, but it steadily gained a following.
  • The post-timeskip sequel manga has been ongoing for quite a while.
  • While there was an announcement for an anime sequel as well, we have no news on it right now.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is a very interesting case of a successful sequel. At first, it was entirely dismissed by the Naruto fandom, especially in the West. Fans, already unhappy with the last arcs of the original manga and anime, definitely never asked for a sequel — especially one as different as Boruto.

Boruto was disliked at first, but gained fans later

Boruto is criticized for many things: very slow early arcs, changing personalities of established characters, introducing new overpowered enemies, unbelievable technological progress, etc. With time, fans mellowed out — the latter arcs of manga had a more neutral, and outright positive, reception.

Curiously enough, the anime was in a similar situation — but for entirely different reasons. The anime isn't an adaptation of the manga — it is more of an expansion, and the early arcs feel like fillers (and in many cases are fillers).

Thankfully, the storyline became more coherent the further the anime went, and many fans actually prefer the anime now, especially with some of its fights being exceptionally well-animated.

The sequel manga is already ongoing

The first part of the manga and the anime both ended in 2023. The manga continued a couple of months later, though, with a sequel called Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.

Two Blue Vortex to Boruto is essentially what Shippuden was to the original Naruto series — a sequel after a timeskip. It has already released its first volume — quite a few chapters are already out. Despite that, there doesn't seem to be any news about the adaptation.

The announcement of the continuation for the Boruto anime came out as soon as the original TV series ended. Since then, we have had no actual news about it. While it is almost certainly going to be adapted by studio Pierrot again — they did both Naruto and Boruto anime — no other information is currently known.

The adaptation is shrouded in mystery

We don't even have any key visuals for the new series, which means we don't know what it is going to adapt, either. It is very likely it is going to adapt the post-timeskip arcs from Two Blue Vortex, following the structure of the original Naruto/Shippuden pair. The air date is also not known — and fans can't even speculate on it.

The sequel seems to actually be in the works, but it doesn't look like it's coming out anytime soon. Perhaps that's for the better: the beginning of the Boruto anime, as mentioned before, was heavily criticized for its filler content.

If the anime catches up to the manga too early, it will have to resort to using fillers again — the alternatives are stretching out the pacing or the anime going on multiple breaks, and these are arguably even worse.
