One Punch Man Season 3 Was Announced Almost 2 Years Ago. Where is It?

Spoiler: still in production, it seems.

Summary:

  • The announcement of OPM S3 came out in 2022, but there has been no news since then.
  • S1 looked amazing, while S2 looked subpar — and fans don’t want the studio behind the latter to work on S3.
  • Lack of information might actually be a good thing for the anime.

An announcement about One Punch Man receiving another sequel came out back in 2022. Fans weren’t that excited, however: after the less-than-welcome reception of Season 2, they were concerned about the anime production quality. Many questions arose, including when it was going to be and which studio was making it. It’s almost 2024 now — and since then, we still know nothing other than it is “in production”.

S2 was criticized for its subpar visuals

Let’s face it: OPM S1 looking as good as it did is nothing short of a miracle. Shingo Natsume, the director behind it, assembled a team of experienced animators who were passionate about the work — and with these resources, the first season, animated at Madhouse, was one of the best-looking anime of its time. To this day, it still looks better than almost every anime that is released; the second season, coming out in 2019, however, didn’t follow suit.

Natsume and Madhouse couldn’t return to the project, being preoccupied with Boogiepop and Others, and the production committee reassigned OPM to J.C.Staff — a studio that was already swarmed by other projects. Because of this, S2 looked much, much worse than S1 — and was not received well by fans. Curiously enough, if the first season didn’t look so good, the second one would not have been ultimately panned — in the end, it just looked subpar, not absolutely awful. The storyline behind it is pretty good, but the animation compared very unfavorably to that of the first season.

Viewers don’t want S3 to be made by J.C.Staff

Because of the circumstances above, viewers don’t really want the anime to go to J.C.Staff. Despite the studio not working on as many anime at once anymore, the damage to its reputation (in fans’ eyes) has been done; as such, fans want OPM S3 to be made at Madhouse again. There are leaks circulating that the studio behind the production will be MAPPA — but there are no official statements about it, so there doesn’t seem to be any reason to believe this statement.

Is lack of information good or bad?

Over a year and a half, there has been absolutely no information on the upcoming sequel. No key visuals past the original one, no trailers, no mentions of staff or studio making the anime — nothing. We also don’t know when it’s releasing, and honestly? That might be a good thing. Of course, it might indicate production issues, but it also might mean that there’s more time to work on the animation — which is something that made many fall in love with One Punch Man in the first place.
